Glyn ..... you're very welcome!

Glyn

Glyn Report 30 Mar 2018 09:24

That was a pleasant surprise Sylvia. I was hazy about the Chester area and didn’t realise it was Cheshire. I thought it was Wales and that confused me. I did find a record that Frances came from Flintshire, and I imagine that must be a shire on the borders that no longer exists.
I have Welsh relatives too and they come from Monmouthshire but the boundaries have changed there too and sometimes they’re in one county and then in another.
I’m glad I asked about it so you could find out it was near your teaching job etc. Thanks for all your help

I also giggled .... and googled to find out wehre it was, as OH comes from Chester.

To my amazement, I found out that it was part of Greater Budworth and now absorbed into Northwich, very close to where I taught school back in the mid 1960s!!!!

Glyn Report 29 Mar 2018 22:09

That’s great. So Mary and Johns parents names too. Thank you.

I had to chuckle at the place name Witton cum Twambrooks!!!! Apologies for anyone living there, but what an unusual and amazing name for a place

Thank you for that extra information. That’s helpful to know. It’s a challenge sometimes to think of different spellings for their names but you’ve done brilliantly.

From the image of the Parish Register ........

William Blake, Carpenter, of this Parish, Bachelor
Frances Dimelow of this Parish, Spinster
Married by Banns
Witnesses:- Thos Peers and Elizabeth Dimelow
Signed by William Blakie and Frances Dimelow

It definitely is Blake in the first place on the image, but that could just be mishearing and / or mis-spelling by the Vicar, as William signed Blakie

Incidentally, both William and Frances and both witnesses coudl write their names.

Glyn ............

registration of births, marriages and deaths began on July 1 1837.

Before that date, all you can get will be the Parish Register entry.

Those are slowly being digitised, otherwise you would have to find out where the relevant Parish Register is now kept, find out if you can visit, ad then copy out the entry.

Sources online for Parish entries are the Mormon site, Family Search (records only, not the user submitted entries!); FreeReg, Online Parish Clerks sites (not every county covered), and the subscription sites Ancestry, and FindMyPast

https://www.familysearch.org/search/collection/list

You have to sign up with Family Search, but it is free to do so and seems safe

you might try this one as well for Cheshire ...

Thank you all. A great combined effort

FWIW .........

.......... OH was born in Wales, parents lived in Chester. :-D

His Mother went to a nursing home 10 miles away, just over the border. The border has since moved and he now would have been born in England.

That border has always been somewhat "fluid".

OH's mother was Welsh, but that was not the reason he was born in Wales ........... the nursing home was the closest one that she could go to.

greyghost

greyghost Report 29 Mar 2018 17:22

Could have been born Wales - Chester is just about on the English/Welsh border, may have been the nearest place for baptism ???

ErikaH

ErikaH Report 29 Mar 2018 17:10

So the 1851 census giving her birthplace as Wales would seem to be inaccurate
