If you don't have a birth certificate for Henrietta or are unable to trace her before 1911, I can't see how you could positively identify her father, especially when there was no mother's name listed on her 1911 marriage cert

There is no evidence of his approx age, or place of birth.
Neither men named David Stewart found on this thread look plausible

One seems to have died in infancy and the other was a merchant seaman rather than a general labourer as listed on Henrietta's marriage

Harriet or Henrietta- you keep swapping?

The Henritte Stewart in Buckhaven on the 1911 census age 20 was born in Edinburgh.

What was her address on the marriage certificate in 1911?

Who were the witnesses?

How do you know she was born Northumberland?

GlasgowLass Report 12 Aug 2017 17:51

Thanks Austin,
Did you obtain the 1911 census?
I am assuming that she was boarding or in service, living with a family of another name because I could not see anyone else named Stewart listed on the same index.

I obtained the 1911 marriage last week to satisfy my own curiosity
There is no mother listed for 21yr old Henrietta, only her father, named as David Stewart, General Labour who is not noted to be deceased.
( i have seen plenty statutory docs that fail to name a father but, no mother is a 1st for me)

Henrietta & William Phillips gave the same address:
176 Denbeath, Wemyss
Marriage took place on 27 Oct 1911 at West High Street, Methil
Witnesses: William and Margaret McAdam

I too wondered where her Northumberland birth info came from which is why I asked Pauline about the 1911 census in Buckhaven.

If she was born in Edinburgh....
These are the only 2 possibles for a child born in Midlothian between 1889 & 1892
STEWART
MARY HENRIETTA
F
1890
692/1 257
Leith North

STEWART
HENRIETTA
F
1892
685/3 177
Canongate ..... I would guess at this one!

( 3 others were born in Glasgow/ Aberdeen /Dundee)

EDIT:
Henrietta's occupation at time of marriage was: Flax Mill Worker.
Does that concur with 1911 census in Buckhaven?

There is something really odd about this woman

I'm planning a trip to the GRO this week and I will look at both of Henrietta's other marriages and her death cert to check for parentage provided on these

I cannot locate a previous marriage for Joseph Spears but I know his children were born in the Kirkcaldy area the 1920's.
I will look at the births to see who their mother was.

His 2nd son, named Harry was killed in a road accident in 1953.
The death announcement gives his parents as" Mr & Mrs" Joseph Spears but, the address matches with Joseph's own death announcement the following year.

AustinQ

AustinQ Report 15 Aug 2017 11:44

The address on the announcements I see is 41 (you'd previously put 14) Leslie Street.

SPEARS.— KiIIed while on duty a result of a motor accident 27th July 1953 at Checkerell. Weymouth. Harry Lauriston Spears 9 Clyde Ave.. Kirkcaldy, beloved husband of Robina Grieve Barclay and second eldest son of Mr and Mrs Joseph Spears 41 Leslie Street Kirkcaldy. Deeply mourned. Friends desiring to attend funeral please meet cortege at Windmill Road Gate. Dysart Cemetery, to-day. Ist August, 1.35 pm.

SPEARS At 41 Leslie Street, Kirkcaldy on February 16th 1954 in his 76th year, Joseph Spears, beloved husband of Henrietta Stewart.

There is a photo of Henrietta (I think) in the following paper:

Fife Free Press, & Kirkcaldy Guardian - Saturday 28 May 1955

KIRKCALDY FAMILY’S FOUR GENERATIONS
Four generations of well-known local family are picture above. They are Mrs H S. Ramsey, of 41 Leslie Street, Kirkcaldy, who is holding her eight weeks old great-granddaughter. Miss Mary Ness; Mrs N. L. Laird, grandmother, and Mrs R. N. Ness, mother, both of 56 Cleish Gardens, are left and right respectively

This is the announcement of the Great Grandchild's birth:

Odd again,
For security reasons I can't give too much info but, it looks like Henrietta Stewart was
with Joseph Spears for a very long time before Willliam Phillips divorced her!

I spotted a birth and was sure that Henrietta was the mother,
Why else would a child born in the 1920's be called Henrietta Stewart Spears?
She became Mrs Laird

And so matches the article :-)

Joseph lived at different numbers, same street before his death (number 30 & number 56):

Fife Free Press, & Kirkcaldy Guardian - Saturday 17 June 1944

PATERSON—SPEARS.—At Invertiel North Manse, on 3rd June, 1944, by the Rev. A. R. Macpherson, B.A., Andrew Paterson, second youngest son of Mr and Mrs Andrew Paterson, 25 Winifred Street, Kirkcaldy, to Janet Campbell Spears, second youngest daughter of Mr and Mrs Joseph Spears, 30 Leslie Street, Kirkcaldy.

So Joseph died in February and Henrietta had remarried by July:

Fife Free Press, & Kirkcaldy Guardian - Saturday 24 July 1954

MR & MRS DAVID RAMSAY, 43 Leslie Street wish to thank all their friends and neighbours for lovely presents received on the occasion of their marriage.

It all adds up now.
I wonder why William Phillips waited until 1950 before getting a divorce.
( The divorce was at his insistence)

They must have been living apart for over 30 yrs. !
I'm guessing insurance reasons. LOL

Pauline,
I don't understand your question.
"Were there any children with her 2nd husband Spiers"?
The question should be... were there any children with William Phillips?

As you seem to have known her, I am rather puzzled.

It seems that Henrietta's marriage to William Phillips was very short lived.
All children born from 1919 onwards were from her union with Joseph Spears

Ist child that I can find was born and died in 1919.
David Crawford last names Spears/ Phillips/ Stewart
Born 7 or 8 yrs after her marriage to William Phillips

Oh Rootgather!
I saw the birth record today.
The child with 1st names Agnes Wardlaw was born in Dec 1913.
As you have been keeping up, you will note that William Phillips and Henrietta Stewart married in Oct 1911
Agnes's birth record confirms that Henrietta and William Phillips were living apart by Jan 1912 !
Henrietta already had a son, born before ANY of her marriages with no father listed, although I strongly suspect that William Phillips was the biological father of her son.

Joseph Spears was the father to all of her children born from 1913 onwards

Working back on this thread....
Pauline fluctuated between Harriet and Henrietta Stewart but did not clarify her reasons
Based on original info, this was posted by Safc on 7 Aug

Harriett Stewart
England Births and Christenings
Name Harriett Stewart
Residence Place Durham, Durham, England
Gender Female
Christening Date 16 Apr 1890
Christening Date (Original) 16 Apr 1890
Christening Place Wesleyan Methodist, Durham Circuit, Durham, England
Father's Name David Stewart
Mother's Name Walten

Henrietta's death confirms that her original name was HARRIET.
Marriages 2 & 3 plus the death cert also confirm that her mother's name was Margaret WILTON.
It now looks like Safc was correct after all.
No document states that her father, David Stewart was a Merchant Seaman.
No document gives his name as David B Stewart?

He is listed a General Labourer on her 1st marriage and a Gas Work Labourer on all of the other documents .

As I suspected, there is no mention of William Phillips on her death record.
Informant was her son in law .

Did you go to the records office today GlasgowLass? There was a birth of a possible son, William S Phillips shortly after they married and in the same registration district. That chappie married in Edinburgh but no death showing for him on SP so I couldn't check his mother's maiden surname.
