Looking for details of my Grandmother Ellen Power born c.1880.
Married in 1903 in Newport, Monmouthshire to my Grandfather Frederick Curthoys.
Frederick was born 29/9/1879 in Redwick Gloucestershire and died in Newport in 1948.
Some records I have show Ellen born in Newport others as being born in Ireland. Would be grateful for any info
Thanks
Martyn

I'm not seeing a death in England or Wales for Ellen.

I think you will need to purchase a copy of the marriagr cert for information regarding her father.

Is this a possibility for her death, with her age and name a bit out?
Perhaps the informant wasn't sure of either?
Do you know when your grandmother died, Martyn?

Many thanks for all your prompt replies and suggestions. I now have an exact birthrate in 1881, although the 1911 census shows it as 1882.
Thank you PricklyHolly for the info regarding the estate of my Grandfather Frederick Curthoys. That indicates Ellen was alive in 1948. I was born in 1955 and was told that I had only one surviving Grandparent and that was my maternal Grandmother. So in theory she died sometime between 1948 and 1955.
Odd why she was seldom mentioned in our family and why no death records.
New to all this so where do I buy a copy of her marriage certificate and would it be worth going to the Newport records office to trawl through their records to see if a death is recorded.

If the GRO is known........

Is referring to the Volume and Page numbers.

Which in this case is.....

Surname First name(s) District Vol Page
Marriages Dec 1903 (>99%)
Curthoys Frederick W Newport, M. 11a 418
POWER Ellen Newport, M. 11a 418

Volume 11a....... Page 418

Births years often vary on the census records.

PricklyHolly Report 25 Oct 2016 09:52

Ah, our post's crossed Martyn........I have just explained it for you in case you didn't know.

:-)

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 25 Oct 2016 10:05

If I were you, Martyn, I'd be inclined to buy a copy of the 1957 death cert for Helen Curthoys (details already posted).

You would only have been two when she died. I'm sure nobody was telling you about surviving grandparents at that age.
So by the time you were old enough to be told that sort of detail, and to understand what it meant, you likely did only have one surviving grandparent.

If she was seldom mentioned in the family, perhaps contact had been lost after your grandfather died - perhaps there had been some falling out?
That could support the fact that the details on the death record aren't quite correct - maybe the informant didn't know there were family members to contact?
