There's no death on FreeBMD of a James Wilde between 1940-1950 which matches the age of your man.

You say that this person is your ancestor so evidently he was married with children? So who is the child from whom you descend?

Edit: Just re-read the thread and you say he was your gran's nephew so not your ancestor, an ancestor being someone from whom you descend.

There are other war deaths that may fit- remember that sometimes stories can get distorted over time, and what you remember, may not necessarily be the truth.

Manchester Evening News - Monday 13 November 1944 (with photo)

Driver, James Wild (R.A.S.C) aged 23, Northfield Road, New Moston (Prisoner of War).

Shirley I didn't say I was eight when he died..I said I can remember my nan telling me the terrible story of her nephew when I was eight he could have died in the 1940s
and she continued to tell me the story over time, I would.nt question her at eight..so did,nt get too much info, just dribs and drabs along the way

As I said If you were 8 when he died it would narrow down a death year

Or is it that was when you were told about it ?

Even then if we have the year you were told then we would know it was before then

If you were 8 at the time you should be able to work out an approx year of death
