We are searching for my maternal grandfather, Jack Marshall.
Born 1912-16
Originated from Hull, Howden or Driffield, Yorshire.
Possibly married Howden girl after 1940
Was in Haltwhistle working as a contractor for the British Army in 1938-39.
Possibly soldier already in the army prior to 2WW.
Had a friend called Jack Prentice (b. abt 1917) who he possibly met in Haltwhistle 1938-39

Do you have your mother's birth cert for her mother's maiden name?

Or is it not quite that simple?

There's a marriage on Freebmd of a John L G Marshall in Howden in 1945. (Claire said he married a Howden girl.)

Maybe the one born 1916?

Looks like the bride was born 1926, so I won't post the records, in case she's still alive.
Easily found on FreeBMD.

Thankyou, now have more definate information on John Prentice, may find Jack or John Marshall who was a workmate of his in Haltwhistle 1938-39.
Possibly working on a bridge or railway.
Some suggestion that J Marshall was a soldier but not very clear
Am guessing J Prentice not on 1939 register due to birthyeat not outwith the 100 years?

Thankyou
I think John Prentice sadly died as a young father, accident at work in ? Selby late 1940-early 1950s
Will have a look at the Yorkshirebmd, that is good source

I have followed this thread and have wondered what you know Claire?

You must know your mothers name, the daughter of 'Jack' (unless you were adopted or some such)

If you post or PM the full details of what you know, you might receive some positive help.

Members have been 'digging in the dark' to try and help you

AustinQ

AustinQ Report 26 Jun 2016 07:41

Now you've added that Jack/ John Prentice may have died 40s/ 50s, I'm doubting that the above John T Prentice is correct. A tree on Ancestry has this as his death:

Name: John T Prentice
Birth Date: abt 1916
Date of Registration: Mar 1969
Age at Death: 53
Registration district: Ryedale
Inferred County: Yorkshire North Riding
Volume: 1b Page: 1087

which doesn't fit with your info.

As Gins said- add as much information as you can- even small details can help.

Gee

Gee Report 26 Jun 2016 08:38

The above death appears to be related to this probate record

John Thomas Prentice
Died 11 1968, Annie Street, Selby
Admin (no name mentioned) £585

Added: I've sent Claire a PM asking for more details (it's easy to miss a request amongst all the posts)

Gee

Gee Report 26 Jun 2016 11:09

The posters moms birth certificate does not show the fathers name (but there was talk of him being John/Jack Marshall) and she was later adopted

I don't think I need to go into detail, you can work out why, I'm sure. The posters mom is still living so I'm mindful of 'privacy' being respected

The information that Claire has supplied could well indicate that this may be 'Jack'

Info from Claire indicates that Jack / John was "a couple of years" younger than Esther, and came from Hull / Howden / Driffield area.

So - assuming he was born in that area, and "came from" doesn't just mean that's where he had lived before going to Haltwhistle - as well as the births suggested by LancashireAnn, there are these other possibilities:

Births Sep 1913 (>99%)
Marshall John B Pearson Sculcoates 9d 468

Births Sep 1914 (>99%)
Marshall John Milner Beverley 9d 191
Marshall John H Lynch Sculcoates 9d 352

Births Mar 1915 (>99%)
Marshall John Starkey Sculcoates 9d 319

Births Mar 1916 (>99%)
Marshall John F Heath Sculcoates 9d 225

Or maybe even this one:

Births Mar 1912 (>99%)
Marshall Jack Berry Beverley 9d 183

Plenty of choice!
