At last I can ask for help, there was a small blip in the system.

I have George Trotman & Sophia Dee both born 1774, they had a son named William George Trotman b.1804. However I cannot for some reason find William after 1804 to see if he married or had any children, I would be obliged if anyone could help please.

Keith - best if you respond on here rather than by message - much better

AnnCardiff

AnnCardiff Report 10 May 2016 19:16

that marriage to Mary Lewis which is posted is from the free site - www.familysearch.org - and is part of a more full family tree that is on there

Hi Keith,

Could you tell us how you have traced back to George and Sophia through your family please ?

There are many details on FamilySearch site for this family but most of these, especially in that tree just do not add up and there is no source info for most of it as it comes from a large Pedigree Resource File with detail 'submitted' by people all over the world and 'joined together'.

We need to start with what you know as 'fact' and then work steadily backwards.

Many thanks everyone for your input, the problem I have is that George Trotman b.1774 who married Sophia Dee also born 1774 they had a son William George Trotman b.1804 in Berkeley Gloucestershire. George married Sophia on the 6th October 1794 in Coaley. There were seven other siblings namely, Lydia b.1796, Elizabeth b.1798, Esau b.1799, Deborah b.1801, then George, Ann b.1802, Eliza b.1807, and an unnamed child b.1808. What I cannot find out is who William George Trotman married, someone said to me "he may have changed his name around and called himself George as his father. All these events are in the district of Woodford, Gloucestershire.

The other problem searching all the agencies is that some people have got some incorrect information that say that George, if that is was what he eventually called himself married my GG Grandmother Mary Lewis Trotman" this is absolutely wrong, I have all the information available for Mary and her boyfriend Anthony Savage and her following husband George Brown who she stayed with until her death. So if any of you kind people can tell me anything about this son of George and Sophia I would be most grateful.

Forgot to mention George Trotman 1774 descend from Thomas Trotman b.1538-1606 who married Anne Tyndale b.1540-1618.

Hi Keith,

Can you tell me if you have absolute proof of those other children born to George and Sophia please?

They do appear on the 'One World Tree' on Family search but there are no reliable source details.

However, there 'is' proof of a marriage of a widow Sophia Trotman to a Brett Ford in 1798 which would mean that George must have died before this and therefore his son could not have been born in 1804. (Ann mentioned this above but it does appear to be most probable).

Sophia and George 'did' appear to have a son William in 1795:

Of course, he could have died and they then named a further son after him (not unusual), BUT, if that is 'your' Sophia's remarriage then any son born in 1804 would have been a 'Ford'

This is, of course, not giving you detail on his marriage which is what you are looking for but we need to get all his details correct before we can hope to be sure of any marriage we may find.

Ahhh - I now see that you have travelled back through your family to Mary Lewis Trotman.

Perhaps we should set aside that William George for the time being and concentrate on Mary.

Can you tell us what detail you have on her please?

Dea Report 12 May 2016 10:36

Well, Mary Lewis Trotman and George Brown appear to be easy to follow back to 1841 census - I can see no possibility of a marriage for Mary to William George Trotman.

Mary appears to have been born a 'Trotman' and did not gain the name through marriage.

She was a spinster on her marriage to George Brown in 1860, even though she had had several children to him and a couple to a previous partner (who was NOT William George Trotman)

Thanks Dea & Maddia, I will go for that all sounds feasible, I will study your finding later, you are on the ball with my GG Grandmother and her husband George brown. The couple you mention that she had before she meet George, one is William b.1838 he is my G Grandfather and George b.1835 his brother. Mary first child did not marry. Their father was Anthony Savage and I have the all the details on them. The source of my information on George and Sophia comes from a tree that Alf Beard did some years ago, he would never speak to me because I was always correcting him.

Some records are kept at Portsmouth records office because my great grandfather William when there to join the Navy.

I think that you have answered one of my niggling problems and that the reason why we could not find him was because of the remarriage to Bret Ford, the other children I do not no the source of their details. I think I have enough to revise this tree. What I am trying to do basically is to try and find a connection between George and Sophia's tree and mine they all lived around Woodford, Coaley, and North Nibley maybe one day I will find it. Thanks again Dea.

No probs Keith - There may very well be a connection somewhere but it is not the one you started on.

I will see if I can find a link somewhere further back..........

Dea we do have a Ford in our family he was a Patrick Ford b.1934 he married a cousin of mine Maria Trotman b.1937, I haven't been able to see if he is a connect, I really want to try and find two people in the 18th or 19th century, they must be there.
Thanks for all your help I am going to take in now all you have sent me and undate my ancestry tree.

Dea

Dea Report 12 May 2016 19:31

I think you need to step back and look at the facts and the people that you know are correct - forget 'Alfred Beard's' tree - there may be a few things in there which fit but the majority of it seems to be incorrect.

When you have digested what you now have, come back with any questions.
