It was not compulsory to put deceased on a marriage certificate where the father was no longer living. The headings on the certificate only ask- Father's name and surname, and Rank or Profession of father.

Joseph's father-in-law, Mark Gardner, was also deceased at the time of the marriage in 1867 and this also is not listed.

Slightly confused now Austin - I've had time to sit down and look at the posts. It certainly looks like William's death as its the same address however on his son Joseph William's marriage record taken from London Marriages and banns in Aug 1867 William is listed as the father but doesn't say deceased. Not sure if this is normal not to put deceased or was he still alive?

I suspect she took William's name when her child was born- having a child out of wedlock was frowned upon. It may have been that William Lock was already married so not free to marry her.

She lived as William's wife and therefore assumed his name. It was only when she "remarried" that she reverted to Wright and spinsterhood. Maybe telling an untruth in Church worried her

OK, was wondering why I couldn't find a death for Mary Ann after the 1871 census in Lambeth- it was because she married (which is helpful, as now you have her father's name :-D )

AND GUESS WHAT!! She never married William Lock- on her marriage she is listed as SPINSTER.

If that's her death that Malyon put up at 8 Apr 2016 16:39, then she never married William Lock.

Malyon that is the correct son - just need to find parents records now. It could well be her death though

Kath I don't believe that is the marriage as they seem to have stayed around High Wycombe - unfortunately I cant see a marriage there :(
