I suspect John was also a Merchant seaman- the newspaper article, makes reference to John Wash's razor- when questioned, John said he bought the razor at Portland in America about 11 years ago (c1840).

This was the John mentioned in the article- it was Henry Harrington (the brother of Mary Wash) under suspicion- Perhaps this is Charles' brother?

There's an article about a murder in Tollesbury in 1851, the suspect lived with John Wash (dredgerman) and his wife. During the court case a Mrs Wash, wife of Charles Wash (dredgerman) gives evidence that she was at John Wash's house on the day of the murder.

It seems likely that John and Charles, both dredgermen, and both living in Tollesbury could be relatives (especially as Charles' wife was visiting John's house).

I wondered about this one- which might explain why he wouldn't be on the 1841:

Images says birth place Hollesbury- but I don't know where that is- thought it might mean Tollesbury??

+++DetEcTive+++ Report 29 Mar 2016 22:58

Unfortunately, the 1841 doesn't show relationships to the head of the household, only rounded ages, occupation and if born 'in county'.

Reposting to clarify

1841 England, Wales & Scotland Census Transcription
Britton Street, St Luke Chelsea, Kensington Union, Middlesex, England

John Wash Male 55 1786 Not born in County - Ironmonger
Sarah Wash Female 55 1786 Not born in County
Charles Wash Male 20 1821 Middlesex, England (no occupation)
Maria Wash Female 20 1821 Middlesex, England (no occupation)
Ellen Wash Female 15 1826 Middlesex, England (no occupation)
Martha Wash Female 10 1831 Middlesex, England (no occuption)
Jane Wash Female 6 1835 Middlesex, England
............

The transcript of the marriage does not show the name of Charles' father. As it happened 3 years after the 1841 census was taken, it should have either shown the name (John?) or Deceased.
In contrast, Elizabeth's father is shown as Stephen, Deceased.

The 1841 posted by Maddie might be correct, but on the other hand it doesn't provide documented 'proof'. If a later census is available including one of the names on the 1841 in Charles Wash household, that might give more credence. Similarly if Charles named any of his children after his birth family.

DetEcTive.
Thanks for your input. He had a father named John ( see post from Maddie ).
I will follow up on the two witnesses as suggested.
Thanks, Peter.

+++DetEcTive+++ Report 29 Mar 2016 19:57

As there is no father named on the MC for Charles Wash, then either he was illegitimate or didn't know his father's name (left/died when he was very young?)

Have you followed through with the witnesses, James Deadman & Eliza Ann Deadman? If there isn't a connection to Elizabeth's 'side', they might be related to Charles

I know about the census and when they changed. If you look Mike I was referring to the 1901 census that you put on this thread at 13.46 and that they both said they came from Tollesbury. Someone else could have given the information for them. They could have been deaf for example.

I have found in my own family many variations of ages and places of birth in the censuses.

Hi Mike.
We have Charles Wash's Marriage Cert. but no parent entry for Charles, only Elizabeth's father.
Regards Peter.

PatinCyprus , all the censuses up to 1901 were completed by an official.
1911 was the first one to be completed by the head of the household.

Agree the marriage cert could help a great deal.

Do have a query - at the age of 79 was someone else giving the answers to the census taker other than Charles and even Elizabeth?

PatinCyprus

PatinCyprus Report 29 Mar 2016 13:56

Could this be Thames Ditton which was in Middlesex. In 1861 he says London.

Thames Ditton is south of the RiverThames not far from Hampton Court which is on the northern bank of the river. London would be the general area.
