Charles Report 29 Mar 2016 12:52

I am looking for any information on Charles Wash born 1822 in Ditton Middlesex.
He married Elizabeth Mira Playle ( born Tollesbury Essex ) inTollesbury.
His actual place of birth and his parents are my main concern.
Awaiting some good news.

1844 Marriage cert should give you his father's name

PatinCyprus

PatinCyprus Report 29 Mar 2016 13:56

Could this be Thames Ditton which was in Middlesex. In 1861 he says London.

Thames Ditton is south of the RiverThames not far from Hampton Court which is on the northern bank of the river. London would be the general area.

Agree the marriage cert could help a great deal.

Do have a query - at the age of 79 was someone else giving the answers to the census taker other than Charles and even Elizabeth?

PatinCyprus , all the censuses up to 1901 were completed by an official.
1911 was the first one to be completed by the head of the household.

Hi Mike.
We have Charles Wash's Marriage Cert. but no parent entry for Charles, only Elizabeth's father.
Regards Peter.

I know about the census and when they changed. If you look Mike I was referring to the 1901 census that you put on this thread at 13.46 and that they both said they came from Tollesbury. Someone else could have given the information for them. They could have been deaf for example.

I have found in my own family many variations of ages and places of birth in the censuses.

As there is no father named on the MC for Charles Wash, then either he was illegitimate or didn't know his father's name (left/died when he was very young?)

Have you followed through with the witnesses, James Deadman & Eliza Ann Deadman? If there isn't a connection to Elizabeth's 'side', they might be related to Charles

Charles

Charles Report 29 Mar 2016 20:25

DetEcTive.
Thanks for your input. He had a father named John ( see post from Maddie ).
I will follow up on the two witnesses as suggested.
Thanks, Peter.

Unfortunately, the 1841 doesn't show relationships to the head of the household, only rounded ages, occupation and if born 'in county'.

Reposting to clarify

The transcript of the marriage does not show the name of Charles' father. As it happened 3 years after the 1841 census was taken, it should have either shown the name (John?) or Deceased.
In contrast, Elizabeth's father is shown as Stephen, Deceased.

The 1841 posted by Maddie might be correct, but on the other hand it doesn't provide documented 'proof'. If a later census is available including one of the names on the 1841 in Charles Wash household, that might give more credence. Similarly if Charles named any of his children after his birth family.

I wondered about this one- which might explain why he wouldn't be on the 1841:

Images says birth place Hollesbury- but I don't know where that is- thought it might mean Tollesbury??
