Deborah Report 27 Feb 2016 19:05

Hi, I wonder if anyone can help me please? I am looking for a trail which has gone cold after 1901 census as follows:

My great grandfather Isaac Davidson born 1866 in Carlisle, parents were John and Catherine (nee Oniel). In 1892 he married Agnes Notman, and they had 5 children. possibly more who did not survive.
1901 census as follows:

Isaac Davidson
England and Wales Census, 1901
Name Isaac Davidson
Event Type Census
Event Date 31 Mar 1901
Event Place Carlisle Botchergate, Cumberland, England
County Cumberland

Gender Male
Age 35
Occupation BRICKLAYER

John Davidson Son M 5 Carlisle, Cumberland
Isabella Davidson Daughter F 2 Carlisle, Cumberland
Charles Davidson Son M 0 Carlisle, Cumberland

In 1903 Agnes and daughter Isabella aged 3 died, and after that I cannot find Isaac anywhere! Son Charles is found on an industrial training ship in 1911 in South Shields, (having been sentenced to 5 years for housebreaking) His daughter Margaret born 1894 was living with an aunt, so I am guessing they all split up after Agnes' death..

There is another Isaac Davidson, but he married a Christian (wife name), and this is not my great-grandfather..

I have no idea where else to look, and I can't find his death records anywhere, can anyone help? It is such a mystery to me so far. I was told the family didn't move far from Carlisle, but this may be limiting my search.
Any help would be so welcome
Thank you
Deborah

Wow! That was speedy!! Thank you so much!

I did see the 1926 death of Isaac Davidson, and it was the only fit age wise, but when I found it on this website http://www.carlisleshistory.co.uk/page6.htm, it lists this Isaac as buried with wife Christian (55/10 indicates the grave and place in the cemetery) and if you look there you will find wife and daughter buried there, so I don't think it is him?

Re Agnes Notman, I found their marriage cert. and her father is Michael Norman, not George, (there were 2 Agnes born in the same place & very similar ages..

I am still mystified as to where Isaac was in 1911, with all family split up, so any help with this too would be a big relief.
And thank you for the work so far, you lot are brilliant!!!

An interesting thought...I did wonder that after his wife died he just abandoned the family? He was with her on 1901 census, then lost her in 1903 with daughter a couple months before that, and possibly a new baby...

My grandfather (his son) was found housebreaking - possibly starving at 10 years old, and sent away, 5 years later, no-one came to collect him, so he joined merchant navy. So it is possible that Isaac emigrated to get away from it all? I will look up those passenger lists and have another look at the brampton death, do they get ages wrong on death certificates?
again, my thanks for the help...he must have been somewhere!! My grandfather rarely spoke of him, if ever, and never told us about his own misfortunes...

Have you looked in Scotland?

2 deaths for Isaac Davidson (exact match on first and surnames) born 1867 +/- 3yrs

Deborah

Deborah Report 28 Feb 2016 12:48

no, didn't look in Scotland, his ancestors come from the borders, Arthuret and Kirkandrews, and Dumfries, so will have another look there...

This is Isaac's mother in 1911. Although she's widowed she states she had 10 children, 6 are living and 4 have die. You may be able to work out from that if Isaac is still living?

The transcript is wrong, the household is only Charlotte, Cyril and Catherine. (Incidentally Charlotte claims she had 7 children, 5 living and 2 had died, so where are the other 4?)

Hi Rootgatherer,

A really good idea, good detective work here! I haven't found all of the siblings details yet (for Isaac), only know of 1 death before 1911 so far. I will work on finding out who the 6 living are.

Yes interesting that Charlotte has only 1 child with her. I found 3 other children at St Peter's boarding school/orphage? in Durham, 3 brothers aged 11-16, which is strange. Her daughter Kate is in a home for "friendless girls", whatever that means (Durran Hill, Carlisle). I can only guess why they have been sent there, perhaps as paupers?

Elizabeth

Elizabeth Report 28 Feb 2016 23:48

Isaac's eldest daughter Margaret went to live with Catherina Mc Fadyen after her mother died, she was her mothers sister who married a Collingwood Mc Fadyen. Both aunt & uncle died in Barrow-in-Furness
