Poolie Girl Report 4 Feb 2016 14:37

My father was born in 1927 and my grandmother returned to her parents around 1931. My father always said the last letter they received from my grandfather was just before the war! I wonder if he told my grandmother about the new child, Pauletta, who would be half-sister to my father. Could be a whole new set of relatives out there somewhere.
I have his death certificate. Death was registered by J D Grant, below that looks like Rank then below that Stepson. I assumed this was a son of his last wife, Lilian Dickinson but I could be wrong

You say he got with your grandmother, when was that ?

Poolie Girl

Poolie Girl Report 3 Feb 2016 22:48

My thoughts exactly. It seems he was a bit of a womaniser and there's no guarantee a wedding took place for somebody to pass themselves off as a married woman. As you can see from the records you've found, a lot of names were used

Just occurs to me, if Thelma B Rhein was born 1892, it's a bit unlikely she would have a (first?) child born 1939...maybe the Mrs Phillips mentioned is another lady altogether?

I wonder if this might be Thelma going by her middle name in 1939? another couple of weeks and FMP will open the register to look.

Yes, he was a musical director. Worked around the country in various theatres. The year was actually 1939, not 36. Just thought - maybe it is a Scottish birth

Poolie Girl

Poolie Girl Report 3 Feb 2016 18:07

Well, his first wife was born Rhein which she changed to Rayne for stage. He was still married to her when he got with my grandmother. I know he later married a Dickinson but still trying to work out what happened in between times. That's why I searched for Pauletta without a surname in case she was only registered with her mother's name

Rambling Report 3 Feb 2016 18:05

I assume he is the Mr J Mervyn Phillips who is named in other news re music? Might that be his stage/professional name? eg this

"
HORNSEA AMATEURS TO PLAY "THE MIKADO"
produced by those experienced revue writers, Tommy Mostol and Harry Curwen, with the inclusion of tuneful music by J. Mervyn Phillips, who also acts as conductor to the revue, comes to the Hull Tivoli Theatre next week, with reputation for being lavishly

Like you, not seeing a birth for a Pauletta Phillips in 1939. Several PaulettEs but no Phillips.

Perhaps the paper circulated to those that would know who the family were, but the birth wasn't in this country?

Thanks Rose. I was thinking there was an error with the OCR. Maybe it should have been Pauline or something
