I have hit a brick wall so hope there is someone out there who can help me
Stephen Gaskell was my Gt Grandfather he was living in Newchurch in Rossendale in the 1881 census
his wife was Elizabeth Ann Gaskell ( Nee Ormerod) they had three children
George Henry Gaskell , b1870
My Grandmother Elizabeth Alice Gaskell b 1873
James Ormerod Gaskell b abt 1880 they lived with their Mother in Bacup
they were all in the 1881 census
but none of them are there in the 1891 census
I have found that Stephen sailed from Liverpool on the ship
The City of Richmond to New York soon after the 1881 census was taken where I
found him, arriving there on the 19th August 1881
but there the brick wall comes into play and I cannot trace him any further he may have gone on to Canada,
Hope someone has knowledge of him Thank you

Does anyone have any idea where Stephen Gaskell went to after New York in 1881 could it have been Canada as I have an idea that my Grandmother said her family had gone to Canada, or perhaps even know how to find out about it

Octogenarian's Funeral

Deep regret has been occasioned by the death last Sunday of Mrs Elizabeth Ann Carter, who was in her 87th year, was the widow of Mr George Robert Carter, who died three years ago. Mrs Carter was a native of Bacup, but had lived in Burnley for 60 years, She leaves three sons and three daughters. The funeral took place on Tuesday in Burnley Cemetery. Mr J Quirk conducted the service at 15 Furness Street, the home of Mrs Carter's daughter, and also performed the last rites at the graveside. Floral tributes were received from Lily & Harry, Dorothy & Harry, Emmeline & John (USA), Fred & Alice (USA), Elizabeth and Willis, Cynthia and Diana, George & Rose the neighbours.

Re: the 1883 death at sea posted by AustinQ - that S Gaskell was a seaman (second mate) at the time of death. He worked for Goodyear & Co out of Liverpool.

There are Masters & Mates certificates on Ancestry for a SAMUEL Gaskell born 1857 Birkenhead. There are no entries for him after 1882 so it's highly likely that the 1883 death is his.
