KathleenBell Report 18 Dec 2015 16:46

I can't find a Douglas Horsburgh born in Surrey in the birth index. Could the Douglas you are looking for have been born in Scotland?

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 18 Dec 2015 16:54

Unfortunately it's not possible to search for such a recent birth (1855 or later) on ScotlandsPeople using parents' names, so without buying birth certs it would be impossible to pinpoint a particular person.

Do you know when he was born?

If he was born after 1911, he wouldn't appear on any UK census anyway.
But if John Horsburgh was 67 when he fathered Cranston, then Douglas could well have been born prior to 1911.

AustinQ

AustinQ Report 18 Dec 2015 16:56

Cranston was born Dumfries- there are a couple of Douglas Horsburgh also born Dumfries (in 1917 and 1928)

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 18 Dec 2015 17:02

I can't see a John Horsburgh born c1869 in Dumfries-shire in any censuses.

KathleenBell

KathleenBell Report 18 Dec 2015 17:03

If you know whether Douglas was older or younger than Cranston then you should be able to decide which of the two births given by AustinQ is the most likely to be the one and you could then buy the birth certificate for his parent's names.

Would these be siblings of Cranston? Hard to believe that the father was born 1869.

One wonders how you managed to type 1869 when you meant 1904?

AnnCardiff it's easy to check the actual details of a FindAGrave record

http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gs&

using the 'affiliate record identifier' on the search form is the fastest if you have found that at familysearch

119991663

http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=119991663

the death date was 1940 ... since a child was born in 1942, that is not the mother

(re the children, I still don't think posting the birth registration details of living people is appropriate ...)

Pauline - how do you know your Cranston had a half brother Douglas?

did he magically appear in your tree? :-)

JoonieCloonie

JoonieCloonie Report 19 Dec 2015 00:25

by process of elimination at scotlandspeople,

John Horsburgh and Janet Hogg married in 1934

it makes sense that if Douglas was the son of the same John Horsburgh, his mother was John's first wife, and so he was born before 1934

if John was born in 1904, then the Douglas Cranston born in 1928 that AustinQ mentioned is a likely choice

Pauline you really do need to pay to order a certificate at scotlandspeople to answer the question

AustinQ

AustinQ Report 19 Dec 2015 07:33

As Joonie said, John Horsburgh married Janet Hogg in 1934 Edinburgh-

However, John is listed as Bachelor.

John's address is listed on the marriage as Claygate, Canonbie.

This article may refer to him:

Southern Reporter - Thursday 12 February 1925

Motorcycle accident at Canonbie- John Horsburgh, Claygate, Canonbie, met with a severe accident while motorcycling on Friday afternoon. He was descending the brae from the west to cross Gilnockie Bridge when he ran into Messrs Percival's bus which plies between Carlisle and Langholm. The driver, when he saw the motorcyclist coming, drew into the side and brought the bus to a standstill but the young man dashed into it with great force, Fortunately the wheel of the cycle struck the guard iron on the front of the bus, otherwise the rider would have been pitched headlong on to the radiator, As it was he fell heavily, and sustained a fracture of the right thigh.

Relation Name: Cranston Horsburgh
Date of Birth: 1932
Place of Birth: Scotland

(somebody has above?, from 'Search all Member Trees' (top right of page here, under 'Search')

(John Horsburgh seems popular also)

Chris :)

(looking at link posted to other 'Thread', all seems muddled, perhaps a bit too much looking at others 'Trees', rather than actual Certs.!)

AustinQ

AustinQ Report 19 Dec 2015 10:42

There does seem to be lots of confusion! Putting your information in a tree (I use Ancestry) would help.

Cranston Horsburgh was born in 1936 Canonbie- his parents were John Horsburgh and Janet Hogg.

John Horsburgh and Janet Hogg married in Edinburgh in 1934.

The parents of John Horsburgh were John Cranston Horsburgh and Alice Raper (they married 1900).

--------------------------------------------------------------

Inscriptions from Canonbie Churchyard:

In Memory of Douglas dearly beloved son of John Cranston and Alice Horsburgh who died at Claygate June 10th 1922 aged 5 years. Also of the above John Cranston Horsburgh who died at Eccefechan January 21st 1932 aged 65 years. Also of their son F/O George Horsburgh RAF killed in action in France August 7th 1944 aged 30 years. Also Alice Raper, wife of the above John Cranston Horsburgh who died Feb 21st 1965 aged 88 years.
-------------------------------------------------------------

So this appears to be the BROTHER of JOHN:
Birth:
1917 DOUGLAS HORSBURGH Male CANONBIE /DUMFRIES

So this Douglas was Cranston's Uncle.
----------------------------------------------------------

This is John and Douglas' parents in 1901:

Address: 2 Summerside Street
Registration district: Leith North
Civil Parish: Leith North
Town: Leith
County: Midlothian

John C Horsburgh 1869 Head, Grocer (born Lamarkshire, Riggar)
Alice R Horsburgh 1881 Wife (born Yorkshire, Cawood Common)
Lizzie Raper 1883 Relative, Grocer (born stabor, Sherburn)
