Can someone please help?
I am trying to research an ancestor's parents. He is, Charles Dew born 1817 in Salisbury, died in 1880 London St. Pancras. He married in Salisbury December 1840 Hannah Tabor/Taber. From what I can find, it seems as though his father was Edward Amor b. 1797 in Laverstock Wiltshire and his mother's name was Ann. Was it possible for a couple to marry and adopt the bride's name (in this case Dew) as opposed to the groom's name? Have I confused myself and gone down a blind alley? I have looked on the GR sites and Ancestry, and maybe Edward Amor's father is Robart/Robert Amor who married Mary Dew, but not sure when.
Is "Amor" as a name, a euphemism for illegitimacy? I'd very much like hear if anyone has any ideas.

Looking at the various records, I strongly suspect that Charles was the illegitimate child of Ann Dew, and that Edward Amor was a name he used on his marriage certificate in order to "look better" for the in-laws.

Looking at several Public Family Trees on ancestry I notice that Ann seemed to have a number of children, some with the surname Dew, some with the surname Amor, and some with the surname Russell!

Maybe she did have a lover called Edward, and "Amor" was the name picked for his surname :-)

If one could take a look at the original Parish Register entry, one might be lucky enough to find a note added by the minister as to whether there was a suspected father. Unfortunately, such notes are not often transcribed

The fact that Charles was probably illegitimate is upheld by the fact that he uses the name Dew, while giving his father's name as Amor ................ otherwise, he would be using the name Amor himself.

Many thanks to you all for your quick replies. The comments regarding Charles being "illegitimate" certainly make sense and if it is the case then it would seem to solve a problem. Ann seems to have had a great deal of stamina given the number of children she had and bestowed her favours liberally!!!! Once again thanks for the information, now I can look forward to some more detective work.

In the early 13th century, Saint Swithun’s priory held a small estate of about 16 acres, land that may also have been held by the Eyre family in the 14th century and later by John Dauntsey. It is thought to have descended with that family and then with the Earls of Abingdon. By 1764 it was sold to Robert Amor, passing eventually to his daughter and was settled on her marriage to William Tinker, who still owned the land in the early 19th century. By 1828 it was bought by the Earl of Radnor and merged with the manor estate.
