Hi all,
Firstly, Happy New Year.
I ordered Alexander's birth certificate from the GRO on 24th December and lo and behold it arrived yesterday 31st, what cracking service from the GRO.
Alexander born Elemore Lane, Hetton-le Hole 2/1/1869
It confirms Alexander's father was John, the Horse Dealer in the 1871 census, and his mother was Mary (nee Robinson). The census collector therefore must have been a little confused and put his mother as Jane.
Checking their marriage and other census records ages vary and places of birth also vary but no doubt it is the correct family.
Thanks again for your replies and interest,
Ian

Hi all,
After a lot more searching without a result I have ordered Alexander's birth certificate from the GRO. Let's hope there is a father's name on it.
Will post again in the new year when the certificate arrives.
In the meantime Merry Christmas to all,
Ian

Yes, same 1871, but don't you think there might be a chance that Dinah from 1881 posted was his Sister, did you see them both at Front Street 1891?...
(and occupation of Alexander on Birth Cert. of John would be good also!)
Chris :)

Thanks for your replies folks, sorry I couldn't stay on-line through the day but I have to see to my 90 year old mother-in-laws needs and also take my wife shopping.
greyghost - yes that's the family I referred to which I don't think is my Alexander's family.
malyon - that's the Alexander I'm looking for the parents of.
Chris Ho - your 1871 is as greyghost's and the one I found.
Looks like it's time to send for a certificate and again thanks for your time.

Could this be the family that is referred to on Ancestry?
I've added in the actual places of birth as listed on the original as transcript only gives County and also put children in age order. Father John is a Horse Dealer
There is an Alexander birth registration March 1868 in Gateshead

I've had a good look but there is nothing concrete to confirm who Alexander's Father was so I'm afraid the only way forward is his Marriage Cert.
Please come back on this Thread to tell us who the Father was when you get the Marriage Cert; my money would be on John :-D

There is a Gordon family living in Hetton le Hole in 1871, head being Richard b.1825 Easington Lane with wife Elizabeth b.1831 Gilesgate, Durham.
They have seven children all born Easington Lane, but no Alexander mentioned, last one mentioned is Thomas b.1867.
The only trouble with this family is that on 1881 census Richard is listed as born Bradford, Elizabeth born Sheffield. The boys William, born Easington Lane, Thomas, born Haswell which is in the same area.
Perhaps Richard being a Hawker was 'trying to keep his head down'.
If these are Alexander's parents where was he in 1871 and 1881?
