Some of the problem is I have no indication of where William was born except he got married :-

In 1851 he is in Retford but the census copy I have does not give his place of birth?

Thank you Prickles, I am glad you are making the most of this thread, it is possibly the last bit of my 'Pettinger extravaganza'.
I have got the Pettingers back to William 1796 but I can't find him being born/christened in IGI. Another site that is not how it used to be. Am I not looking in the right place?

I have just checked the date of birth on Bessie's baptism record.

It actually reads....... born 1st Jan 1894

Nellie is obviously 5 "months" old on the 1891 census...not 5 years.
