Trying to trace the above.
Son of John Callan & Jane nee Davies. Born in East Hetton Coxhoe County Durham
The above was my uncle. Have obtained birth certificate
He has never been mentioned by name in the family. I have a cousin in area who is 83. She only knew of one of the children dying and we have traced this dead child, female Eliza Jane.
I can not find any death record for James Callan as a child.
There is one for another James died 1913 but I can match that with his birth of 1912 - so not my James.
Any ideas anyone? Another family mystery! Thanks

That is my thread Grey ghost. However this is a different James! Rather than confuse it with that thread, I have started again. My ancestors seemed to have no imagination with names. This James was my uncle. Whereas the James Newry Callan on other thread is a distant relative. But thanks

Thanks Argyll Gran - again that's me. I have now most of that ancestry as its quite an old post. On this post I am only looking for my missing uncle from the info given. Really is a mystery as none of relatives in the area have ever heard of him.

Have you ruled out this death?

Deaths Jun 1966 (>99%)
CALLAN JAMES 55 PLYMOUTH 7A 750

Probate:
CALLAN, James of 3 Oxford Terrace, Plymouth died 31 May 1966 at Greenbank Hospital, Plymouth. Administration Bodmin, 30 June, to Gwendoline Beatrice Callan, widow. £540.

Maybe he didn't die as a child, but became estranged from the family for some reason. I'm sure you've considered this already.

I am just working through the deaths Argyll. I found several marriages in the North East. Then spreading the area. The oldest of the family was born 1897, and his descendants have a family tree ( not extensive) without him mentioned. Cousin insisted only 9 in the family, but my dad said 10 and that is what we have found. I am thinking black sheep. Going to put all the info together and see what I can find.

Could this be his marriage (with Gwendoline using her middle name first)? :-

First name(s) JAMES
Last name CALLAN

Registration month -
MarriageFinder™ JAMES CALLAN married
BEATRICE G BURN
Spouse's last name BURN
District PLYMOUTH

Possible birth from this marriage:-

Last name CALLAN
Birth year 1940
Birth quarter 2
Registration month -
Mother's last name BURN

Page 855

There are also a couple of other births that could also be from this marriage, but the one above seems almost certain to be because of the child's name.

Possible marriage for the above daughter:-

First name(s) GWENDOLINE M
Last name CALLAN
Marriage quarter 1
Marriage year 1959
Registration month -
MarriageFinder™ GWENDOLINE M CALLAN married
GEORGE T TEMLETT
Spouse's last name TEMLETT
District PLYMOUTH
District number -
County Devon
Country England

There is a member of Genes called William who has George Temlett and Gwendoline Callan in his tree. You could try contacting him to see if he has more information.

Argyll Gran, yes I have, and sadly census must have been done before June. But he is 100% one of this family.

I think Beatrice Gwendoline (or Gwendoline Beatrice) may have married again (although I can't find a marriage) because there is a record of a Gwendoline B. Emmett (Callan) in Plymouth on the 1939 register with one other person and another who is officially closed. Perhaps she changed her name by deed poll since James seems to still be alive in 1939.

Well I paid £6.95 on Find my Past for the 1939 record. Said it showed dates of birth. But that page for them is closed. To open it I have to provide death certificate, to prove dead. I understand people on the page could be living but surely they could show those who must be dead? Or warn you before you pay the money. Not impressed.

Vivien

Vivien Report 29 Nov 2015 00:43

I also don't understand the EMMETT name, when it shows his widow in 1966 is Gwendoline Callan.

KathleenBell

KathleenBell Report 29 Nov 2015 08:17

If they hadn't actually divorced then she could still claim to be his widow - even if she had changed her name.

I must admit I thought that it was only deaths after around 1990 that you had to provide the death certificate for because they stopped updating the register then. I provided my mother's death certificate from 2003. Perhaps they have had too many requests to open entries and haven't got time to look up the death themselves.

EDIT - are you a subscriber to Findmypast or did you just buy credits? I'm not certain but I think I remember seeing that subscribers don't need to supply death certificates for deaths that show in the indexes (I could be wrong though).

Thanks Kathleen Bell, no I am not a member. If I joined them all I would be bankrupt. If this is true and any one is a member, please could you have a look for me

KathleenBell

KathleenBell Report 29 Nov 2015 11:13

Even members can't look at the record without paying to unlock it. What I meant was that you may not have to buy the death certificate if you were a member (although I may be wrong about that). You could try contacting Findmypast and asking them to clarify the situation.
