Have you tried Searching All Member's Trees (top right under 'search') on GR? If he or any other suggested relatives are listed, send a message to the tree owner. They may have further information.

When your subscription runs out & you don't wish to renew, don't delete your account, just allow it to lapse. Make sure that if you change the email address your GR Account is linked to, you update the new details on your GR account. That way if this thread is found by someone who recognises the name they can send you a message by clicking on your name. It does happen :-D

For a more immediate solution, then probably purchasing some of the suggested certificates is the best way forward. It all depends on how many pennies you've found down the back of the sofa.

Tried looking for his will, couldn't find anything, rather hoping his family is on here somewhere

Wonder if his Estate went to Probate? Does anyone know how to search for those?
Scotland's people only has indexes up to 1925, so too early.

As an update, now know Archibald was in the Cameronians and left as a Major in 1948. He was in fact in Erskine Hospital from 1977 to 1983. Really seeking to connect with Archibalds family.

Can't see any sign of Archibald (1948) on SP or Ancestry - at least not conclusively.

There are plenty of Archibald Mclellans, and without the middle name or initial it's impossible to tell if any of them are him.

Chances are he's still alive - he'll only be 68-69.

Mistycat's transcription of the 1954 travel record isn't quite correct.

Phyllis and Robert Kirkcaldy don't seem to have anything to do with the McLellans.

Phyllis's name does not include the name McLellan.
She's just Phyllis Nyasa Kirkcaldy.

Tried the hospital , no reply so far. I'm now changing my interest to Archibald Neville Mclellan born in 1948 who arrived back in Scotland in 1954. No record of this guy but he would be the next logical step in the chain.

You could try contacting Erskine.
They may have old records about their patients' families/NOK.

Thank you, yes I have the date of birth and his death certificate. I'm trying to trace his descendants. As background, we think he may have been my mothers father, was hoping to get in touch with surviving members of his family but I've run out of places to look after his death 1983. The death was registered at Erskine hospital by the asst commandant. A wife is listed, Kathleen Bachelor, cannot find a record of where or when they were married and if they had any children.
