If she is your great-great grandmother, is Shatwell her maiden name and did she marry or was her child (your direct ancestor) illegitimate?

Thank you for all your replies. A Sarah Shatwell gave birth to Samuel Shatwell in 1852 in Macclesfield Workhouse. Samuel was my Great Grandfather. He was taken to live in Manchester by his father Samuel Thorpe. There was no marriage and I can't trace Sarah in 1851 census. I am trying to establish a link between the Sarah who gave birth in 1852 and the Sarah Shatwell who died in the workhouse in 1865.
Young Samuel lived the rest of his life as Samuel Shatwell Thorpe.
cheers Ken

To be sure, you could always buy a copy of the death certificate to see what information is given on it.

Deaths Sep 1865 (>99%)
Shatwell Sarah Macclesfield 8a 78

It should give you, at least, her age and the name of an informant which may help find further information on this particular Sarah.

A copy of Sarah's death certificate was delivered today and it confirms she died in the workhouse, aged 42. Informant appears to be a member of workhouse staff.
I think I am stuck unless she has a headstone which mentions a son named Samuel. Am trying to contact church where she is buried.
Thanks for help
Ken
