RobyNZ Report 23 Oct 2015 21:59

Hi, I would appreciate any information anyone could provide on the following family. I have been researching the family of Janet (nee Storer) and James Stewart of Gourock/Greenock.

I am having difficulty tracing the offspring of their eldest son James Stewart B1876 in Greenock. With help I found he enlisted in the Army, married an Edith Dodd in Chesire and had a son James b1913 in Yarmouth, Norfolk. In 1919 he returned to Scotland and settled in Dalmuir. I have not been able to find if he had any more children.

I have found a letter from my Great Uncle John Barrie from NZ (emigrated 1924) saying that on a visit back to Greenock he and his wife stayed with cousin David Stewart around 1975. I have not been able to account for this cousin and wonder if his father was James b1876.

Many thanks in advance for your assistance
:-)

For BMD,s for Scotland. you need the website Scotlands People which isn't a subs site . You have to purchase units to look at refs and then you can purchase a cert though them .

Units though are reasonable priced .

Hi Shirley

Thanks for your advice but I am already frequent user of Scotland's People and have had no luck. The problem is there are hundreds of James Stewart's and it's like looking for a needle in a haystack.

Kay????

Kay???? Report 23 Oct 2015 23:53

As there is no maiden name along side Scotland birth registration it would be a needle in a haystack trying to find any right births, the only clue could be if any of the Stewart children were given Dodd as a seconary name or even another family name if known, there could even be a naming patern,....

Hi Kay

Thanks

James Stewart grandparents were:

Maternal: James Storer and Mary Malcolm Angus
Paternal: James Stewart and Jane Turnbull

His older half sister (and my Great Granny) married and became Mary Barrie

RobyNZ Report 24 Oct 2015 01:37

I have ordered James Stewart's younger sister's death certificate.

Agnes Stewart married Robert Kelso, after he died Agnes came to NZ and then returned to Scotland around 1959ish and died in Greenock in 1968

Thanks Chris

James middle name is a surprise as Adam doesn't appear to be a family name.

According to a tree on Ancestry, James Adam Stewart's parents were James Stewart and Janet Scott.

Has this James been mixed up with yours, and is the marriage to Edith perhaps for the wrong person?

Or is the tree wrong?

Thanks I have found James Stewart has somewhat perplexed me.

Yes the last reference you've given me I'm sure is mine. Going by sibling names and street address.

I must admit did go to bed worried as I knew Adam wasn't a family name.

I couldn't find my James Stewart in the 1901 census. I don't know what happened to James Stewart or who he married.

This is the US entry which Ancestry suggests might be him - the DOB is wrong, but that doesn't necessarily rule it out. However, somebody has added a note to say his name is James J Stewart, which wouldn't fit. And there's a sister Elizabeth, who's not on the 1891 census

I have accounted for all his siblings.

My mother was born here in NZ and on questioning her she thinks James Stewart stayed in Greenock and that's all she knows.

The only other clue is my Great Uncle mentioning he stayed with cousin David Stewart when visiting Greenock in late 70's. I don't know how he fits in? I thought he may be James's son.

Thank you all once again.

This birth on SP looks like a distinct possibility.
The image of the cert would give you his parents' names.

And his marriage:

1932 STEWART DAVID STORER
MCCORMICK LETITIA HILLIAR GREENOCK EAST /RENFREW 564/01 0106

And their deaths:

1985 STEWART DAVID STORER M 80 GREENOCK /RENFREW 640/00 0576

1993 STEWART LETITIA HILLIAR
Other surname: MCCORMICK F 86 GREENOCK /RENFREW 640/00 0892

Impossible to know if they had children, as MMS can't be used in a search, and Stewart is such a common surname.

EDIT:
But probably this birth:

1934 STEWART JAMES STORER M GREENOCK EAST /RENFREW 564/01 0780

He married in Partick in 1955.
