It was just by noticing that he was a singer on the 1881 census that I thought I'd check "The Era" - bingo!

Well done MarieCeleste! Great detective work.

I'm guessing she just thought Bradshaw was a better name for an artiste than Smith.

Reading through some items in "The Era" stage newspaper (in British Newspaper Archives) there was one in 1878 that mentioned Michael Dwyer being seasick crossing to Ireland.

So - how about this marriage (shows two versions of bride's name)?

Name: Michael Dwyer
Date of Registration: Oct-Nov-Dec, 1878
Registration district: Dublin South, Ireland
Volume: 2
Page Number: 615
FHL Film Number: 101253
Records on Page:
Name
Emma Gane
Michael Dwyer <<<<<<<
John Watts
Concordia Mercy S Bradshaw <<<<<<<
Catherine Shaw
C M Smith-Bradshaw <<<<<<<
Bigoe Henzell Danaher
Ellen Burke
Marcus Johnston

Was Bradshaw a stage name, or had she been previously married?

ADDED:

The Era, 22 December 1878

"Married, on the 23rd November, by special licence, at Dublin, Michael Dwyer, to Mercy Bradshaw, of H.M.S. Pinafore company"

I just had to look at the 1881 census to see what number they lived at on Every Street Burnley, because many years later 1957 I lived at no. 29. Just saying. :-D

I can't see any marriage between a Smith and a Dwyer between 1875 and 1885.
