I also have a Baptism in 1895 marked PB. In this case that father had died a couple of months before the birth, so perhaps it was also done if there had been a recent family bereavement rather than a sickly baby.

Thanks for your help. The problem is there are a few census with some of the matching names. Not all information is a right fit. I've spent years looking at different Manly & Manley Census. It's been a real pain in the butt.

The name Martha from the 1871 Census works as my grandmother was named Martha. My problem has always been that I could never find information before my Great grandfather's married Charlotte Edge. It's as if he was beamed down by space ship. I spotted a similarity to Frederick Henry Manley in the Marriages under St Mary Magdalene, Southwark. It could be he's not linked. Alfred Maney or Alphonso Manley is my brick wall.

Angela, you will find his children by looking at the censuses - BUT he is not the same James Manley from you other thread.-

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction Gritty & Andrew. Going by the 1881 Census I thought he was born 1818 from Cheltenham, Gloucestershire. It does gives his marriage info which is the same as my info. :-D

It's a shame it doesn't list his children because they are a real problem for me.

Maybe little Susan did live a bit longer- St Thomas is in Devon and her younger brothers were born in Exeter and I can't find a birth to tie up exactly with this death:

It's his regiment- the Riding Establishment of the RA (Royal Artillery)

So what is Riding Establishment RA? What does RA mean?

And thank you Choccy - private baptism, so perhaps she wasn't registered in the death records, she was perhaps buried by the hospital... I'm just rambling.

Why don't some of the babies get registered in the death indexes, but are registered in the births?

No need to go to the NA, Angela, that service record is on FMP - definitely him as has name of wife and details of marriage.

He served 21 years with no overseas service - although he could have served in Ireland as that was classed a "home"

He was born in Uphottery, Honiton, Devon.
