Hi All,
I wonder if someone can help me?

A possible ancestor Susan Manley was baptised on 3 Oct 1876 at Woolwich St Mary Magdalene. It shows James Manley and Susan Manley, as parents of Woolwich.

There are things that I don’t understand about the baptism. What is PB? It is written close to the birth & baptism date. The profession of James Manley says something like Gunner Riding E???? RA or KA?

I can tell you that Susan Manley’s father was married to Susan Adams and that they were married on 12 Apr 1875 at St Mary Magdalene, Woolwich. His occupation is shown as Gunner Royal Horse Artillery.

Did their daughter die young? I haven't been able to find her in the census or death records.

How do I locate James Manley's military records?

Thanking you,

Angela

Andrew

RA could be Royal Artillery.

Best bet for Military Records is Find my Past. Sorry don't have a sub.

I believe PB stands for private baptism

Choccy

Choccy Report 1 Sep 2015 15:02

PB stands for private baptism (usually when a child is not expected to live)

Hi Andrew,
Thanks for that.
I found something that looks like him.

Year: 1871
Country: Great Britain

No need to go to the NA, Angela, that service record is on FMP - definitely him as has name of wife and details of marriage.

He served 21 years with no overseas service - although he could have served in Ireland as that was classed a "home"

He was born in Uphottery, Honiton, Devon.

Owhh....Everyone has been busy.

Thank you Gritty on deciphering the baptism scribble.

So what is Riding Establishment RA? What does RA mean?

And thank you Choccy - private baptism, so perhaps she wasn't registered in the death records, she was perhaps buried by the hospital... I'm just rambling.

Why don't some of the babies get registered in the death indexes, but are registered in the births?

Gritty

Gritty Report 1 Sep 2015 15:26

It's his regiment- the Riding Establishment of the RA (Royal Artillery)

Thank you Potty.

I'm confused now! Which one were you looking at and is it in FMP?

I still can't find what the service record that Potty suggests. None of the show info about marriage or children. Am I looking at the wrong records on FMP?

Select Military armed forces & conflict

Put in James Manley- birth year 1853.

James' military attestation is first one of the search results

I can see it now. My computer is having problems loading the pages on.

Click on the cameral icon to see the images.

Maybe little Susan did live a bit longer- St Thomas is in Devon and her younger brothers were born in Exeter and I can't find a birth to tie up exactly with this death:

Deaths Jun 1877 (>99%)
Manley Susan 0 St Thomas 5b 44

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction Gritty & Andrew. Going by the 1881 Census I thought he was born 1818 from Cheltenham, Gloucestershire. It does gives his marriage info which is the same as my info. :-D

It's a shame it doesn't list his children because they are a real problem for me.

FMP is showing me Technical Difficulties page :-(

Potty

Potty Report 1 Sep 2015 16:27

Angela, you will find his children by looking at the censuses - BUT he is not the same James Manley from you other thread.-

Angela

Angela Report 1 Sep 2015 17:11

Hi Potty,
Thanks for your help. The problem is there are a few census with some of the matching names. Not all information is a right fit. I've spent years looking at different Manly & Manley Census. It's been a real pain in the butt.

The name Martha from the 1871 Census works as my grandmother was named Martha. My problem has always been that I could never find information before my Great grandfather's married Charlotte Edge. It's as if he was beamed down by space ship. I spotted a similarity to Frederick Henry Manley in the Marriages under St Mary Magdalene, Southwark. It could be he's not linked. Alfred Maney or Alphonso Manley is my brick wall.

Going to cook dinner now.

Thanks for your help.
