im researching my great grandfathers second marriage to a fanny Ayles. She was a widow when he married her in louth, lincolnshire in 1901.She was born fanny harris in chichester, daughter of Alfred Harris. She first marris Felix john ayles in 1879, croydon.H died in 1890.Fanny appears in 1891 census as a widow, living in croydon and in 1881 she was married but lodging with friend but under the name of Frances Ayles..(no sign of her husband felix)On her marriage certificate to felix it states her father was avitular or innkeeper and her brother charles johnaton was a witness.I have found her on 1861 census in with mother Sarah...says father away and comercial traveler.1861 they are in hampshire lodging with alfreds father...both vitulars. In 1871, alfred is a reporter in epsom, surry.
The mystery is, i order the second marriage certificate of fanny and my great grandfather john sawyer for and it states fanny was a widow and her father alfred was a lawyer and dosent say he was deceased. The only alfred harris lawyer i can find is in 1871 supposedly the son of thomas horwood,,,unfortunatly it was a transcript error but is the only sign of alfred and a lawyer(barristor and funnily enough he was isle of wight where my alfred was born
Any suggestions would be appreciated
thanks

Hi
I'm confused by your post. She was a widow when she married in 1901, isn't that correct?

thanks folks...yes i have all this information and yes fanny was a widow in 1901 when she married my great grandfather on 30th september , so she would have been on 1901 census living in louth as fanny ayles as the census was usualy taken in april. The marriage certificate definatly says her father was a lawyer.Fannys age on marriage certificate in 1901 says age 46 so would have been born 1855 but on marriage to felix ayles , in 1879 , says age 29 so born 1850...the age dosent tally on marriages or census

Lynda

Lynda Report 22 Aug 2015 19:03

the adress of fanny ayles on marriage certificate was...7 norfolks place, louth lincolnshire

Lynda

Lynda Report 22 Aug 2015 19:06

on 1901 census it says fanny was born 1858 so another discrepency

Original does show Fanny as aged 43 - what age was she on the marriage certificate to your great grandfather (EDIT see you have put that as 46) - had she "lost" a few years to bridge a larger age difference? Or did whoever completed the form not know her age and took a guess?

According to the 1881 census, Fanny's father was already dead as Sarah says she is a widow, so perhaps she "bigged him up" for her husband to be

yes i thought that as well as my great grandfather was an N.SPCC inspector and was very respected

Gee

Gee Report 23 Aug 2015 10:37

On the 1871 census, Alfred is listed as a 'reporter'

The NSPCC was not founded until 1884 (I think)

Edit: He's a 'vitular' on the 1861
