Sheila Mary

Sheila Mary Report 19 Jul 2015 16:55

John James b. 1864 in Cardiganshire, Wales died on 19/11/1919 in British Columbia (West Kootenay : Town indecipherable). He was a widower and a labourer at the Trail Smelters and had lived in the district for ~20 years.

I am unable to find him in the Canadian Census of 1911, and I would like to find out any details regarding his wife and any family.

Any help would be appreciated.

thanks

Sheila

The other thread is marked as answered although it's not - another casualty of that stupid "Mark as answered" button.
So I'll reply on this thread.

The John James in 1881 (posted on the other thread by PricklyHolly, and copied here) is not with the rest of his family in 1891, which would perhaps fit with what Sheila Mary says - if he emigrated at some time after 1881.

Unfortunately, there are several travel records for people of that name going to Canada, and not enough detail to identify him definitely.

All - to avoid confusion, a much earlier request I made for information contained errors and I went back to the drawing board. The latest request is based on finding the correct information relating to John James' death in British Columbia, with the exact date of death on a monument inscription in Cardiganshire.

Hope this helps to ease the confusion.

thanks

ArgyllGran - you definitely have the correct John James in Wales
Gins - I think the emigration year would be a little late, and also in any record I have I didn't see the middle letter A. So perhaps not, but thank you anyway.

I don't see a death for John James in 1919 on the British Columbia Archives site.

Sheila Mary

Sheila Mary Report 19 Jul 2015 17:54

Hi Margee. I found it under :
GR2951 British Columbia Division of Vital Statistics
Vol. 254 Death Registrations074844 to 075084 from familysearch.org website.
thanks

This looks like the death but it's of an infant.

Hi Margee

Thanks for coming back. I think we may be looking at 2 different sources. The one I have found states that the male was born in Wales, was widowed, had been a labourer and had been in the district for about ~20 years. An image was available also. However you have now solved one question I had which was the spelling of Waneta. Thanks

Was John ever married and do you have any other information on him please?

Sheila Mary

Sheila Mary Report 19 Jul 2015 18:30

Dea / Margee. This is bizarre. The record I found was sourced by familysearch.org with the following details:
British Columbia Death Registration 1872 - 1986.
GS 1927144
Digital Folder Number 00437644
Image Number 01525
Reg No 75058
I wonder if there are differences in the 2 sources?

Gins _ I'm afraid the only information I have was he was a widower when he died. I have no further information if he married in Wales or in Canada. thanks

Just for clarity, this is the death registration:

https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:S3HT-DW1Q-L7F

Don't know if I'm missing it, but can't see an age on that registration.

MargaretM

MargaretM Report 19 Jul 2015 18:54

Hi Sheila, yes you're right, that's what it says on the Familysearch site and it is an original record. The one that gives the age as zero was from Ancestry (the date of death was the same) but on the British Columbia Vital Statistics site there's nothing, nada!

Sheila Mary

Sheila Mary Report 19 Jul 2015 19:00

thanks all. The reason I was able to join the death certificate to my ancestor was because of the specific date on his fathers gravestone in Wales, plus the fact that he was originally Welsh. He was 56 years old when he died. But you are right, no age exists on the original record.

MarieCeleste

MarieCeleste Report 19 Jul 2015 19:08

Given that the man dying 1919 seems to have died alone (hence the died 18th or 19th on the death registration) perhaps not much was known about him and the 20 years in the area may have been assumed or based on second hand info.

Sheila Mary

Sheila Mary Report 19 Jul 2015 19:16

MarieCeleste, you are correct and add to that nobody knew his father or his mothers name nor his father's nationality - it certainly points to a lonely life. However somebody did contact his Welsh relatives to inform them, which is why I am so interested in finding out what his status was in the 1911 census.....or even the 1901 census.... thanks

MargaretM

MargaretM Report 19 Jul 2015 19:21

I can't find him on either the 1901 or 1911 census.
