Thanks to you all for your replies, especially Cynthia who has tried to help me find my way around this confusing site.
Joseph Lund was a well known Durham City Alderman and was chairman of the bench of magistrates until his death in 1947. He was also chairman of the Poor Law Institute. He married Frances Annie Lax who was borrn in 1862. One of his sons Frederick Albert Lund was my grandfather.
I have not been able to trace the origins of Joseph Lund - there are conflicting notes in census materialas to where he was born i.e. 'Durham' 'Framwellgate Moor' and 'Relly'. The lengthy obituary in the Durham County Advertiser of the day states he was born in Thornley. This one is really a mystery - I cant find any trace of him beyond the info in the census. Any further info would be appreciated.
