Thank you Mike and ArgyllGran you are both on the button, I have heard back from the Perth, Scotland, no record of Donald/Daniel's death so still in the dark. The last child Eliza born 1833, Charlotte took over the business? 1835, I think and remarried a John Erskine 1837, I think. All saved on another computer but haven't been able to find so I have all the exact dates. Charlotte mentioned as a licencee in other Inns as well as the Flesh Vennel

Gee Report 11 Jun 2015 07:40

Is this the second marriage for Charlotte (senior)

I'm not sure why she would marry using her maiden name and her death be registered in the name of Keir (maiden name Dick)

Are you sure it's 'your' Charlotte as the census info posted give her as 'Keir'

You mention that Charlotte took over the business and was a licencee at other inns- I can't see this information- what was the business she took over? Was it Daniel/ Donald's business?

EDIT: According to Ancestry message board:
"...265 High Street Perth... where Donald/Daniel Keir (my Gt Gt grandfather) held the licence in 1833- 34 "

Hi and thanks everyone yes I have all this information, trying to find a death notice or similar of Daniel/ Donald to try and workout when he was born to prove who his Parents were. From naming pattern I am sure they were a John and Susan/na.
Know where most of children got to except William Dick and Robert. Yes Perth, Perthshire, Scotland. Most left with Charlotte and are on the '41 census. Umm interesting stuff Gritty, no mention of age :-( not your fault.

alviegal

alviegal Report 15 Jun 2015 10:04

As to the names Donald and Daniel, I have found this with my own g grandfather, Donald Stewart also being Daniel on some records.

From http://www.sctbdm.com/scotland-names.html

Donald (male)

Scottish and English from the Gaelic name Domhnall, "world ruler" [TG]. This was the name of four Kings of Scotland.

Daniel and Donald are sometimes, but not always, interchangeable in Scotland because Domhnall, the Gaelic version of Donald, may be Anglicized as Daniel. We have therefore classified these two names as Lesser Synonyms although it should be noted that these two names were fully synonymous in the 17th century and earlier.

Chris

Chris Report 15 Jun 2015 22:39

Hey Gritty yes the business or licence was in Daniel's name, according to the post office records there is no mention of Daniel at Flesher Vennel / High street only Charlotte. Daniel is mentioned under or in licencee's.
It is interesting that you found information of wills, I have had no joy for Daniel on the Scotland's people site, keeps saying no result but I have found Erskines and others.

Thanks Alviegal very interesting stuff and informative re the names and yes it is Charlotte's death notice. The Census is right can't have been done to long before Eliza and Henry came to New Zealand.

Thanks also Mike all true and Eringobragh.
hmm Rootgatherer a red herring or maybe they did their vowels again??
