Thank you Maddie, this could well be John Frederick Bates. I can find no record of a death for Alice Bates prior to 1911 though. So this gives me another conundrum!

Thanks again, Lainey :-S

I am researching my family but have hit a brick wall. Their details are:

John Frederick Bates born in Hound, Sholing, Southampton c1856. He married Alice Amber born in Devizes c1856. They were married in Bursledon Hampshire on 5 December 1875. They had a son named William John Drew Bates who was baptized 10th September 1876 in Bursledon Hampshire. I do not know if they had more children.

In 1891 they were all living in South Stoneham, Hampshire. John was a Market Gardener. His son worked as a Junior Clerk.

In 1901 John and Alice Bates were living in South Stoneham. They were running a Pub. There is no sign of their son William.

Now I do know that William John Drew Bates married and died in South Africa.

There seems to be no record of his parents after 1901. If anyone else has these people in their family tree I would be very pleased to hear from them.

Many thanks, Lainey :-D
