Thanks Cherilyn.........I have looked at that tree but there are some errors. Abigail Jane should be Richardson. My guess the tree owner hasn't been able to see the full name when he or she has researched it.
That is a lovely write up which I will keep :-)

Here is an obit for Henry's father (???) (no doubt the S C Hartley at whose residence he married Abigail) - sounds like a lovely man - from Papers Past - Manawatu Times, Volume XXII, Issue 6061, 24 June 1897, Page 2

OBITUARY.
It is with sincere regret that we have to record the death of Mr Stephen Charles Hartley, one of the oldest pioneer settlers of the Manawatu, at the ripe age of 72 years. Three days ago Mr Hartley was prostrated with a paralytic stroke of a severe nature, followed by convulsions, which lasted until within a few hours of his death. Just before he died Mr Hartley became conscious, and after bidding farewell to his wife and family, he passed away peacefully.
Mr Hartley was a native of Falmouth, England, and in 1840 he sailed for the colonies in the Duke of Roxburgh, and after three years residence in that city he was married, the Rev. Ironsides performing the ceremony. In 1847 he decided to come to the Miuiawatu district and took up his abode at a small settlement named Te Maire about 18 miles up the Manawatu river, and not very far distant from Shannon. Making this place his headquarters Mr Hartley carried on a large trading business with the Natives, travelling very often right up past the Gorge. He was also interested in several trading vessels. Of course all traffic on the river was done in canoes, and Mr Hartley took a great delight in relating many reminisences of his experiences engaged as a trader. Mr Hartley also resided in the early days for some time on the banks of the Manawatu river at a place named 'Hartley's Bend," some distance below the Foxton township. ln 1878 he took up his residence in Palmierston, and for many years past has followed the profession of licensed Native interpreter. Mr Hartley was formerly well-known in musical circles in this town, being for nine years conductor of the Wesleyan choir, taking that office while the late Rev Dewsbury was in charge of the circuit.. Deceased leaves behind him four sons and four daughters, viz., John, George, Charles and Henry (the three former owning farms at Rangitkiei and the latter owning one at Fitzherbert); Mrs; H. West (Rongetea), Mrs. T. Curtz, Mrs. A. Parker, and Mrs H. Kibblewhite, of Palmerston North.
The late Mr Hartley took a prominent part in the settlement of the Manawatu, and was one of the most energetic of the early pioneers. He was always extremely popular with both Europeans and natives, and his familiar figure and cheery greeting will be greatly missed in Palmereton. The late Mr. Hartley was a good husband and kind father, and we tender our sincere sympathy to his wife and children in their sad bereavement.

This tree has SC as Henry's father (but has Abigail as RICHARDS)

Jack is the tree owner. His profile says 'Tauranga, Bay of Plenty, New Zealand'

If you aren't a member of Ancestry, try looking for a Richardson address on page 4 of
http://whitepages.co.nz/white-all/richardson/bay-of-plenty/4/

Alternatively, send me a PM with an email address and message for Jack, and I could pass it on via Ancestry.
alviegal would probably be willing to do the same - she's a very helpful person :-)

Alivegal........thank you so much. This is the right family. :-). I know that I had a relation, Jack Richardson, who back in 1977 got some information from my father ....my fathers mother was a Richardson, which made his Grandfather and my Grandmother brother and sister. Abigail was their eldest sister. We lost contact but I know he was working on the RICHARDSON line at the time.
Do you know how I could make contact with the owner of that tree on ancestry.
Thanks again for your help in researching this family.

Thanks Yvonne and Beverley. I think we are on the right track. I too had found the Hentley/Hartley names and got confused for a while!!! This all makes sense now. I shall take a walk around the FOXTON Cemetery and see who else pops up. A lot of familiy members are buried close to each other.
Many thanks for your help. :-)
