If Elizabeth were born in Mullingar rather than (Mulingar), this could be the County town of West Meath in Ireland. I wonder if they were an Army family?

Ashton, Lancs could be Ashton-under-Lyne (Ashton RD) or Ashton in Makerfield (Wigan RD)

To discover that you need to track down the admission/discharge records if they still survive.

Although it was later taken over by the National Children's Society, Hampshire Archive service would be a good place to start.

The local records office may have admission registers.

It wasn't unheard of for children to be in a home when the mother remarried, have seen this before. Or maybe it was just too hard moving all these children around!
Do you know where she was 1891? Maybe Robert was back with her by then?

Different times, if the mother had left her husband he would have had custody probably, and she might not have had any say in them being put into the orphanage ( and their father may have had no choice if no other member of his family could look after them).

hi
patrick the father was discharged from army in 1877 in aldershot he must have died because the mother remarried in 1879 and robert was only baby
