Thankyou for all the help you've given. Still no luck finding Henrys mum or any other information on his dad Ernle Drake.

Welcome to the world of finding Ernle Drake. I'm no further forward on him after about 6 years of trying.

Henry Ernle is an interesting character - got hold of a copy of the Coastguard records from the National Archive after I found him residing on HMS Beagle (of Darwin fame) in Pagglesham Bay in Essex in the 1951 census, found he had been in the Coastguard in various roles after leaving the Navy, At the time of the 1841 census he was serving aboard ship off the coast of china (at that time HM ships crew were not included in the census).

Ernle Drake is my 3rd great grandfather on my paternal side.
