Elizabeth HOCKING was born about 1821 or 1823 in East Lynn, Cornwall. On 4 Oct 1848 she married John Rutherford in the Parish of St Mary, Dover, Kent. I have quite a lot of info on John's family but I have very little on Elizabeth' s background. Elizabeth died in 1876 in Camberwell, London.

I think her dad was John HOCKING born about 1791 but I don't know where. And her mum was Lucy ?? born about 1791.

In the 1851 census for Dover, Kent for Elizabeth and John RUTHERFORD it says there is present one William PRICE aged 10 years old, mason, born Dover as being a step son. John hadn't been married before and Elizabeth seems to have gone from HOCKING to RUTHERFORD, no other marriage known.

Is anyone able to give me more info on Elizabeth's birth date, details of her parents and some ideas as to how they have a stepson with a different surname when neither has been married before??

1851 original actually says Son-in-Law ( though it probably means step son )

Father of Elizabeth on marriage certificate was John Hocking, a Cow Keeper.

Address of bride and groom on marriage certificate was Round Tower Street, Dover.

ha ha. Yes possibly - again, wondered where he came from. He's only 10 but already employed?? as a mason and he doesn't seem to appear before or after that census.

Ah. So that sounds like she had William John Price to someone else and John adopted him doesn't it?

In other words, she was a solo mother. Living on the farm with mum and dad, they probably accepted him and when Elizabeth went off and married John, William was part of the package deal.

This is proving interesting. So young William moved back to his grandparents place which is why he seemed to disappear from my records.
