I had a peek at this thread yesterday because I have Souters in my tree ... husband of a sister of a brother-in-law :-) ... but they were very wealthy Souters ... unlike my family their in-law married into ...

so Sheila you say his line of Souters live in SA, presumably this doesn't mean descendants of him, rather Souters related to or descended from his father ...?

I did a search at

http://www.national.archsrch.gov.za/sm300cv/smws/sm300dl
'All Archives Repositories and National Registers of non-public records'

but there is nothing for Charles Souter

Kevin Asplin

has a great deal of info about the 2nd Anglo-Afghan War, but nothing there about the 1st. However, he is very helpful and would probably be able to tell you whether anything is accessible.

Hi Sheila

In answer to your question, I really don't know :-(

On a Google search there does appear to be some sites that have some listings of the 188/1881 campaign and one site had a specialist that you could email

Gee

Gee Report 7 Feb 2015 10:11

As there seems to be no sight of Charles after the 1871 census, it might be possible that he fought and died in the first Boer war - 1880/1881

I understand, here we say G'day , but like you I don't. ALL information is valuable. As I found out . I was looking for my birth mother , and there were 3 ladies with the same name born within a week of each other in the same year. it cost a lot of money to get GRO records to find the right 1 Which I did ,in the end so I learnt a valuable lesson Sheila

I spent a lot of time last night looking for variants

I noticed that there were several corrections on ancestry for "souter", which is not as uncommon a name as one would think. t had been mistranscribed in various wild and wonderful ways, but a common one was a mis-transcription of the capital "S" ........ especially for "T", "F" or "L"

I used the wild card * to stand in for 1 or more missing or different letters

so I searched for

*outer

and s*ter

I did notice that there was more than one Charles Robert Souter, including one born in 1867 ................ so one has to be careful to find the one with the correct birth year AND father
