As you can see, Wendy found the marriages of Henry Crow and pm'd them to me, along with some death details. Without her help the only way I could've connected everything would've been to buy all three marriage certificates. What a wonderful lady. Also big thanks to Joonie and Jax for digging up the idea in the first place.

Now maybe I can find his birth.

The family will be so happy.

Hi All,

Wendy here, I can look up the first 2 marriages for you but the last one to Emily Hickling is not on my disc, it may be a Register Office marriage and if so you will need to buy the certificate then, but let me check at the archives first.

Thanks Joonie. Henry is my sister-in-law's family so I'll have to take a good look at this info. She might be very happy to have some cousins!

Thanks.

In 1871 an Ancestry user has corrected Sarah A Crowe's date of birth to 1857 from 1852

a tree search here shows

Sarah Crowe 1858 Nottingham, Nottinghamshire
Sarah Crow 1857 Basford, Notts
Sarah Crow 1857 Basford, Nottingham

Joseph Crow (Stenson) 1862 Basford, Nottinghamshire
Joseph Crowe Stenson 1862 Basford Notts
Joseph Stenson 1863 Basford, Nottinghamshire
Joseph Stenson 1861 Old Basford

so there's a little mystery ... perhaps not sons of Henry, who was away in the military?

Joseph may appear in censuses after 1871 as Stenson

ditto William ... in 1891 an Ancestry user (seems to be one of the people who has Sarah Crow in their tree at this site) has corrected the name from stimson to Stenson

It does seem that the marriage certificate is the next step.
I must admit I hadn't thought of an earlier marriage but when I look at the dates then it is possible. If he married Maria Allcock in 1866 that would make him in his 30's if we take 1830 as his birth date and I guess that's late for a first marriage in those days. I'll have to look at this a bit more.
Thanks for your help.

JoonieCloonie Report 25 Apr 2015 20:33

was Henry actually married first even earlier?

please put us out of our misery and get these marriage certificates :-)

JoonieCloonie

JoonieCloonie Report 25 Apr 2015 17:35

if this record is him as quoted above

Private 17 Jany 1860 20 Nov 1864 - 4 years 319 days

then in the 1861 census he would have been in the military and I believe he would not show in the records that are available on line if he was overseas

have you obtained a marriage certificate to see the name and occupation he gave for his father?

if he was born c1825, there is a reasonable chance he would be with a parent in the 1841 census

I think we have been able to discount the record of the person with James and Sarah so there seems to be no point looking for him in censuses with those parents

the marriage certificate is pretty essential

Yvonne

Yvonne Report 24 Apr 2015 02:00

I have been looking very carefully at all of these records and have had a little input back from the family.

An aunt, now deceased, apparently told them the story of Henry being in the Boer War and deserting and changing his name to Henry Brown. She also told them that Henry was born in 1825. Apparently, there was also a certificate from the Royal Hospital Chelsea which read as follows:

Chelsea No. 65848
This is to certify that Henry Brown late of the 48th Regiment of Foot was admitted as an Out-Pensioner of her Manesty's Royal Hospital at Chelsea on 13 June 1865 and receives a pensiom of 6d per diem. Age at this time 36.

The document is signed on 15 Mar 1870 by George ? (indecipherable), Secretary and Registrar of Royal Hospital, Chelsea.

This fits with info that you wonderful Genes people have provided. It seems to be impossible to pin down his birth year. In each of the censuses - 1871 (1831), 1881 (1833), 1891 (1835), 1901 (1831) and 1911 (1829) - the birth years are different but none as early as 1825. I can't find any reference to Henry in the censuses before 1871. I even tried using James and Sarah as the parents, as mentioned earlier in this thread but still came up blank.

I'm waiting on the National Archives to get copies of the medical document that someone found so hopefully I'll get something from that.

Also, I think he married Maria Allcock in 1866 and she died in 1884 ... there doesn't seem to have been any children from that marriage which seems strange. He then went on to marry Emily Hickling in 1886.

Can anyone see if they can find him in the earlier censuses, I'd be so grateful.

Thanks.

I looked at the pm before reading these replies - thank you. I will sit down and try to decipher the pages ... they really did have dreadful handwriting. I'm also waiting for a reply from the family to see if they can shed any further light on this.
Thanks.

discharge was medical for greatly enlarged spleen

so it is matching up with the family story

he could have served in Crimea, before 1857, deserted, signed back up

The Crimean War was 1853-1856

I can't find a good history of the 82nd on line but someone provided this at RootsChat

Will do and will send to both of you :-)

JoonieCloonie

JoonieCloonie Report 14 Jan 2015 19:47

that's great, did you send them to Yvonne ?

the discharge paper is the one I was after, for Henry Brown
(I only got one page of that)

(the other one, the list of names, is for a Henry Crow, bottom of the page, in 1873, that doesn't seem to be him)

I desperately have to finish some work, will have a good look late tonight !

... now we just need somebody to decipher all those notations on the first one ...

it does say St Martins Parish Nottingham

and of course the question is

was our Henry Crow, Henry Brown ?
