As the passenger list and the arrivals announcement in the newspaper just record them as 'Prideaux, Jane and four children' it is going to be extremely difficult to find their names.

Do you know anything else about her which might help - her age, where she was born or lived, who she married?

How does she connect to your family please?

I have to say, it must have been a dreadful experience - people don't appear to have had cabins and several infants died during the 4 month long journey.

Aha !

I had presumed that she was travelling out there to join her husband but it appears that she was a widow ???

Did her husband die over here or had he travelled first and died in Australia?

Did she remarry to Mr. Watts in 1851?

WATTS George, Jane PRIDEAUX married 1851-08-19 at Res of Mr John, Kooringa, aged 45 (w), 40 (w)

There are 28 women on the English 1841 census with the name Jane Prideaux.

This one has four children and her husband is called Richard. There is a death in late 1841 which could be him. Perhaps this is one to consider:-

First name(s) Last name Gender Age Birth year Birth place

Richd Prideaux Male 35 1806 Cornwall, England
Jane Prideaux Female 35 1806 Cornwall, England
Elizeabth Prideaux Female 14 1827 Cornwall, Engl
Richd Prideaux Male 10 1831 Cornwall, England
Wm Prideaux Male 7 1834 Cornwall, England
Henry Prideaux Male 5 1836 Cornwall, England

Address: Ramsgate, Camborne, Redruth, Cornwall.

This is the death:-

First name(s) RICHARD
Last name PRIDEAUX
Gender Male
Birth day -
Birth month -
Birth year -
Age -
Death quarter 4
Death year 1841
District REDRUTH
County Cornwall
Volume 9

Country England

The only thing against this being the family is that I don't think the two eldest children would still be classed as children by 1848.

Wow :-D

I am working backwards on this one:

My grt grt grt grandfather was Charles Prideaux, he married Eliza Mary Mutton
In Kooringa SA abt 1864, their children John Mutton, 1864Eliza or Jane 1866, & Charles Prideaux.

I could be wrong on this Jane Prideaux with 4 children being my ancestor, but it
Seems to fit.

I am descended from John a Mutton Prideaux m Sarah Ann Penhall - they moved
To Western Aust early 1900's.
My grandmother Eliza born abt 1897 Wallaroo Mines.

Many Thanks,
Marilyn

So, is it reasonable now to confirm, that Jane Prideaux travelling with 4 children
Is my grt grt grt grandmother.
That, her husband died in Cornwall, and she decided to make a new life in Australia.

Her, daughter and husband, and her son came after.

I could never find a Charles Prideaux coming to Australia, so this seems to be
The answer.

There may have been relatives that had come before.

Is it possible to get any Living contacts ?

I have a well preserved photo of my grt grt grandfather Charles Prideaux that
I would be happy to share.

So much appreciated all your help,

Have you used the "search" facility (top right of screen). Click on that and then on "search all member trees". If you put in Charles Prideaux's name there are a couple of people who have him in their trees. You can contact them directly.
