Cherilyn Report 5 Dec 2014 14:39

I have partly knocked down a brick wall with my CURRAN family but hoping sks can help further please.

I have Michael CURRAN b. c1880 who died in 1907 in Western Australia (I have his death notice, wife's 2nd marriage etc). I don't know where he was born but the marriage notice states '2nd son of Patrick & Ellen Curran, of Newcastle NSW'.

I finally found Patrick & Ellen in New South Wales, along with children's names. However, I can't locate their marriage nor children's births - does not appear to be in NSW or Victoria.

Patrick b. County Cavan , Ireland c1845, d. 1921 Hamilton NSW aged 76
Ellen b. Glasgow, Scotland c1847, d. 1920 Hamilton NSW aged 73.
(I have notices and obits from newspapers for both)

Children:
James d. 1898 NSW
Michael d. 1907 WA
John Joseph d. 1938 NSW
Sarah d. 1955 NSW, m. Jno BUTLER 1900 NSW
Ellen (Nellie) d. 1959, m. Geo BRIGDALE 1917 NSW
Barbara d. 1963, m. Edward C LOCKHART 1908 NSW
Mary d. 1956, m. Herbert E DAY 1908 NSW
Agnes d. 1969, m. John A MOONEY 1907 NSW

Not sure of order except I know Sarah was eldest daughter and Michael 2nd eldest son.

Any advice gratefully accepted, thank you!!! :-)

Hi Cherilyn,

I don't have any information, but I did see an article re a mining accident that states Michael (if it's the same one) was 38 when he died- making his dob c1869- earlier than you have.

Geraldton Guardian Friday 23 August 1907

Fatal Accident at Meekatharra
"...The interment took place in the Roman Catholic cemetery, Mr. J. Toohey officiating at the grave. The deceased Michael Curran, aged 38, leaves a widow and one child, and the Italian Giovanni Bertonclli, aged 28, was unmarried..."

Also, I think Edward Lockhart and Barbara Curran married 1903 (not 1908)

Just found the younger 4 kids births in NZ!

it was getting late when I had this bit of a breakthru last night...NZ did cross my mind funny enough! But I was too tired to follow it up.

ellen's year of birth seems a couple of years too early? But good to have her mn.

looks like Michael was a baby when they came to NZ. 1875 seems a good fit, maybe the newspaper got his age wrong?

Cherilyn

Cherilyn Report 6 Dec 2014 01:35

Oh the story gets even sadder.

not only had Micheal's wife Nellie lost a baby daughter aged 10 months the year previous, and was left to care for a 2 year old son, she was expecting at the time of the accident in Aug 1907. The baby girl was stillborn in Jan 1908 :-(

On a positive note, she returned to NSW and remarried, and had 2 daughters.

Bernard Campbell's death registration, if he died in Scotland , will name his parents including his mother's maiden surname if the informant knew the details.

NEWS FROM FOREIGN MINING CAMPS.
West Australia.

This morning Mr. Holman, M.L.A., received a telegram from Meekatharra to the effect that a serious accident had occurred at the Ingliston Extended. Only meagre particulars were available, but it is known that there was a fall of earth at the 100ft level, and that two men were killed. M. Curvan and J. Betonelli.

As parish is Old Monkland, same as 1871 census and mother's name is Bridget, I thought this may be Patrick in 1861:-

1861 Scotland Census about Patrick Curran
Name: Patrick Curran
Age: 16
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1845
Relationship: Son
Father's Name: James Curran
Mother's name: Bridget Curran
Gender: Male
Where born: Ireland
Registration Number: 652/2

....................but father is noted as James and not Patrick as the tree on ancestry states, so maybe not ????

Cherilyn

Cherilyn Report 7 Dec 2014 03:10

Thanks everyone. Age 32 at the time of the accident fits well with birth 1875.

Newspaper reports back then often got ages and even names incorrect!

I have enough to go on for this family now and don't really need to go any further back (Michael's wife's 2nd husband is the link). I had just been frustrated by the Currans for so long as they seemed quite elusive...until I got that lead with the sblings names and the Hamiton/Newscatle NSW connection...then it all fell in to place. Now with all your help I have a really good picture of his life. Mining, mining and more mining in this lot!

Thank you all very much once more.

PS I think it is highly likely that Patrick's father WAS James - he did name his eldest son James after all. Looks like a good match to me (and we all know how suspect info on Ancestry can be!) :-D
