Thank you so much for all your help. I guess we will never get to the truth of the matter. I tend to agree with the information you found. They are legal documents after all and Mum is relying on her memory which as you say can change over the years.

I just hope she doesn't say anything to the passport people as it could make things a bit difficult for her. She loves cruising and not being able to get a passport could spoil things for her.

All the best

It must be confusing to see different information after believing something all your life.

I suspect their is some truth in the information she has- but maybe it has gotten a little confused over time.

Her parents did move around in the first few years of their marriage, but I did wonder if 4/5 New John Street (where her parents were living in 1927- and possibly through to 1929) was a forge- as in 1911 a shoeing and general blacksmith lived there and was listed as working at home.

Also James Vincent Kinneavy (who was also listed at 4/5 New John Street with your Grandparents) is listed in the Kelly's Directory 1936- 1940 at that address as a blacksmith. So it seems likely it was a forge/ blacksmith's workshop.

It's hard to add anything further without seeing who was living at the Highfield address, but like you say it may have been a maternity home or family member. I do hope you find out.

Just to recap- although her mother may have given birth at another address, her parents lived at:

1925 living at 1131 Warwick Road, Acocks Green. (With Irene's parents)
1927 living at 4/5 New John Street, Birmingham (also a blacksmith's workshop/ forge)
1930 living at Sunningdale Road, Moseley
1935 living at 6 Park Terrace, Oakland Road, Handsworth (they lived here until at least 1965.

Thanks Gritty for all your help.

she remembers the 6 Park Terrace address, but doesn't recognise the other addresses.

I tried to convince her that as a baby she probably doesn't remember where her parents were living. but she wont have it. She said they were living in a forge at the time of her birth and that they moved soon after.

She said she was born at 7pm and her mother said they only just got there in time. hence thinking it was a Maternity home.

She said that the registra must have put the wrong address down or her mother was confused. I thinks my mum is getting confused.

Thanks again everyone for all your help.

Jane, Your mother's birth is registered under West Bromwich, Staffordshire- I may be wrong but I think the the Highfield Road in Erdington is incorrect. Unfortunately, the electoral registers on Ancestry don't cover Staffordshire- so it might be easier to contact Birmingham library to see if they hold electoral registers for the area, or to find out where they are held.

Jane- Found Edwin 1927

in 1927 Edwin Chorley was living at 4/5 NEW JOHN Street. Other occupants were James Vincent Kinneavy and Florence Maud Kinneavy.

So they moved from New John Street, to Sunningdale Road and then to Park Terrace, Oakland Road.

EDIT: When Edwin and Irene first married they lived with Irene's family at 1131 Warwick Road, Acocks Green: Residents in 1925-

Abel WILLIAM
Abel SARAH ANN
Abel LEONARD ARTHUR
Chorley EDWIN

Jane, does she recognise that her parents lived at Sunningdale Road, and then Oakland Road?

I think I am going to give up on this. She is not having any of it. She is just getting cross with me.

There is a Highfield Road in Handsworth under B43 and a Highfield Road in Erdington under B8 postal codes.

Jane Report 4 Dec 2014 09:02

Her parents were Irene and Edwin Chorley. She believes she was born in ? nursing home in Aston. HIghfield Road is Handsworth not Aston.

She doesn't recognise the names already mentioned.

She is really upset about this.

Erdington is next door to Aston. There are other Highfields in Moseley and Edgbaston.

Why does your mother think she was born elsewhere?

She couldn't possibly have been aware of her birthplace at the time, nor would she be likely to know her place of abode at any time as a baby.

Was her mother married?

But.........the address recorded on her birth cert will satisfy the passport authorities, so she should have no problems there, unless she causes them herself.

Gritty

Gritty Report 4 Dec 2014 08:49

Although could be correct, I just wanted to point out that- the Highfield Road with William and Lizzie Cox came under Erdington ward.

Thanks Dea.

She is trying to get a passport and if she insists her place of birth is wrong on her birth cert then I dread to think what problems she will cause for herself.

If this was a maternity home or a friends house she might except it as being correct but at the moment she is insisting it is wrong.

You could try contacting the library local to that area and see if they could do an electoral roll look up for you for around that year.
