Hallo, I was wondering if anyone could access these records for me. I want to find our more about my ancester Sidney Court 1839 who was with his grandmother Ann War on the 41 and 51 census. She is registeerd as a pauper so maybe there is info about them in the poor law records.

I can not find a baptism record for Sidney, just a birth record for 1843? Which is a bit odd as hes on the 41 census. On his marriage cert there is no father named

1851
Name:
Ann War

Age:
71

Estimated Birth Year:
abt 1780

Relation:
Head

Gender:

Name:
S Court

Estimated Birth Year:

Any tips welcome! Thankyou!

It's unlikely the 1843 birth is your Sidney- unless this is your relation??

Thank you for your reply. Indeed the first one is not my ancestor so I can cancel out the 1843 birth registration.

The second one is. He later married a Charlotte Bartlett and setteld in Street as a shoe maker. Would the death certificate reveal his parentage?

Hallo, indeed this is the marriage. It's Ann Bartlett not Charlotte! The witness are her family members. But the baptism. Doesnt quite fit. How does the granny fit in?And both parents have to be dead by 1841...See if I can find more about them!

Jacqueline

Jacqueline Report 26 Nov 2014 11:03

Parents are not names on the death certs of adults

Nor, in fact, on any, although the death of a child would usually be registered by a parent, which would give a clue

What are you actually trying to ascertain?

If no father was named when he married, he was illegitimate

Who registered Ann Warr's death?

It might be interesting - if it was Sidney - to see if he described himself as her grandson

Hallo, Im trying to find Sidneys mother which in turn may clear up who Ann War is. Either paternal or a maternal grandmother her name would be Court, unless she remarried or reverted to her maiden name.

This is the only facts which seem to fit...

The 1843 baptism in Wookey posted by Chris above is likely to be this Sidney

Surname First name(s) District Vol Page
Births Sep 1843 (>99%)
Court Sidney Wells 10 494

Wells RD covers Wookey and he is to be found on the 1851 census in Wookey, born Wookey (co-incidentally living with his grandmother Elizabeth Sheppard).
(Also would tie in with the Michigan death)

If illegitimate as the marriage record suggests, there may well be no baptism to find and there were no penalties for not registering a birth at that time.

Wedmore where Sidney is said to have been born is in the Axbridge RD

Potty

Potty Report 27 Nov 2014 12:13

There are two other Court children in Wedmore on the 1841 census, neither of whom are living with a Court Family:

1841 England Census
Name:Edwin Court
Age:1
Estimated Birth Year:abt 1840
Gender:Male
Where born:Somerset, England
Civil Parish:Wedmore

County/Island:Somerset

Edwin is shown as being at the same address, but in a different household, as this family:

Joseph Boyce 35
Hannah Boyce 35
Robert Boyce 10
Harriet Boyce 10

Edwin's baptism:

County Somerset

Edwin is in workhouse in 1851

The other child:

Name:Sarah Court
Age:2

Gender:Female
Where born:Somerset, England
Civil Parish:Wedmore

Charlott Hurley 26
Henry Hurley 3
Caroline Hurley 1

Sarah Court 2

Sarah's baptism?

County Somerset

Church St Mary Pr
RegisterNumber 2502

BaptismDate 05 May 1839
Forename Sarah Hole
Sex F
FatherForename
MotherForename Ann

Apart from the 3 children these are the only other Courts in Wedmore:

Benjn Court abt 1786 Somerset, England Wedmore, Somerset

Elias Court abt 1821 Somerset, England Wedmore, Somerset

BeverleyW

BeverleyW Report 27 Nov 2014 13:22

Interesting that Edwin and Sarah are both illegitimate but don't have the same mother.
I would think there's a reasonable chance that Sarah's father was a Mr. Hole. It appears to be a common surname in Somerset.

Sally

Sally Report 28 Nov 2014 08:43

Hallo. this is getting intresting, never occured to me there could be siblings!

The Edwin Court who is with the Boyces and is at the workhouse is a pretty good option and I have to look into Betsey more.

There is a wierd coincidence. I found this on the 51 censes.

Benjamin Court 33
Betsy Court 34
William Court 9
Edwin Court 6
Henry Court 2
The elder brother is legit so it doesnt fitt

The Sarah Hole/Sarah Court census and baptism both give Heath as residence. In 1851 Sarah is living with William and Ann Packer as daughter. In 1861 she is Sarah Packer. Ann Court and William Packer married in Bristol 1847 and Ann Court was prob a servant in Bristol in 1841. If she was Sid's mum why dont they take him in too?

Looking into Benjamin Court I found a Caroline Court who is a single mom, but it's in Clifton 51 and the children are born in Wells which doesnt fitt.

Richard Lewis 40 Head
Caroline Lewis 45 Wife
Ellen Cowet 14 Daughter
Caroline Cowet 12 Daughter
Benjamin Cowet 9 Son
Henry Lewis 2 Son

County Somerset
Place Wells
Church St Cuthbert
MarriageDate 17 Jan 1844
GroomForename Richard
GroomSurname LEWIS
GroomCondition Bachelor
GroomOccupation Laborer
GroomAbode Coxley
BrideForename Caroline

Eliasis single, so not a widow who could not care for his children. And seeing they are illigitimate their surname would be their mothers wouldnt ?

Have to hunt more for Betsey Court mother of Edwin but besides that, I think there is nowhere else to look...except cabbage patches, gooseberry bushes and stables :)

Thanks again for all the reactions!

Charles Banwell 30
Betsy Banwell 25
Ann Banwell 1

This Betsey can't be the mother mentioned in the baptism as she was already married when that baptism took place.

Only one baptism coming up for a Betsey Court: Glastonbury, 1813, father James, mother, Ann. That would seem to be the one who married Banwell and Millard.

Sally

Sally Report 28 Nov 2014 12:57

Thankyou. Indeed BANWELL! But indeed it doesnt fit. Like the bit on the bottom, 'with consent of friends'.

Now hunting for Elizabeth or Betty and trying to connect her to Ann Warr the grandmother. She's an enigma too, she maybe it's Wall or Warre...now if she was a Court before and had a daughter Betsey.....

But somehow I wonder is she really is the grandmother!
