Chris, the Frances b Pelham from Wandsworth, seems to gave died in 1900 when she was 35 ish, and no joy so far on her birth or her giving birth...I'll have to fig deeper and see if maybe she was Elsie's mum or at least to rule her out. Thanks again! |

Thanks Chris! Another angle to check, that's great! Could check her age and see if she had a child, but also maybe if she had a brother called Henry and she looked after the child perhaps? Thank you, this is bringing up some great ideas and 'leads' where I was running on empty! Seeing the forest rather than just the trees. Fingers crossed there is a way out of this forest! |

Thanks argyllgran, that's a really good idea about her taking the name. I wondered if she was an illegitimate child aswell. I have found a census of 1881 for the workhouse, so just before Elsie was supposed to be born. So I'm going to see if any of the women match the list of his servants you mentioned.... Long shot, but according to my aunt, she never wanted to talk about her life, so something along these lines may be the right corner to turn. I do know that she wasn't a Barnados child now though. Maybe she will just forever be an illusive lady! Thank you all for your help and ideas! |

Just thinking out loud here, but it appears that Henry (Ivy's) dad was a barman according to her school records in 1916...a sailor at her baptism in 1905 and in the Devonshire regiment in 1915.... Something sounds fishy with the switch from sailor to soldier or is that a beginners nose smelling wrongly? Was it common for sailors to switch.... |

If a child was born in the workhouse they usually have a baptism. You find there were a lot of baps together all saying Workhouse. |

Yes, the 1911 census suggests 1889 as year of birth, but wedding cert if she really was 21 puts her 1885 ish. And her death cert puts her at 82 in 1966 so 1884... And none of them suggest where she could have come from... |

The 1911 census data you put in seems to match, it puts only herself and Ivy on the census, not surprisingly as my grandfather was born just after the census. |

In the 1901 census posted by Jacqueline, Elsie Pelham's birthplace is given as St George Hanover Square. |
