Re: "I guess that, if his father is not named, he must have died before his son's marriage?"
No, that's not the case - here's the preceeding marr:

Marriage: 28 Mar 1894 St Matthew, Bolton, Lancs.
Henry Johnson - 30, Grocer, Bachelor, 30 Arrowsmith Terrace
Mary Ellen Hope - 22, Spinster, 43 John Brown Street
Groom's Father: William Alfred Johnson, (deceased)
Bride's Father: Peter Hope, Mechanic
Witness: Peter Hope; Elizabeth Jones; William Johnson
Married by Banns by: Thos. H. Ethell Curate
Register: Marriages 1888 - 1897, Page 155, Entry 310
Source: Original Register

As you'll see, deceased dads were named. The reason our Thos Hy didn't name his dad was because he was illegitimate. Either Thos didn't know him, or didn't want to name him. Some folk in Thos's situation named their stepdad, some lied and named fictious fathers, and some (probably the majority) left the question unanswered.

As Maureen said, Thos was born a Lee:

Lancashire Birth indexes for the years:
Surname Forename(s) Sub-District Registers At Mother's Maiden Name Reference
1867 LEE Thomas H Little Bolton Bolton LEE LB/54/353
1871 SIDLOW William Little Bolton Bolton LEE LB/65/310
1876 SIDLOW Joseph Little Bolton Bolton LEE LB/80/34
1878 SIDLOW Mary E Little Bolton Bolton LEE LB/88/131

[Little Bolton is only transcribed to 1880]

I think that, pre-1875, unwed father's could not be named on b.certs.
Unwed fathers could be named on baptismal registers, but rarely were - at least, it's rare in England.

====================

Incidentally, Bolton lay within the diocese of Manchester, so a search of Lee-Kenyon marrs will give a link to the m.cert image at:

No, I missed that. I am still wading my way through that material - family matters (live ones) to attend to. Thank you very much.

Thank you for info so far on Thos Henry Lee. Please can anyone tell me more? , - He married Jane Kenyon 7 April 1894 at St Matthew's, Bolton (GR people kindly found the marriage in the Lancashire BMD). As his father is not named in the Lancashire marriage info. I have little to go on to investigate his family and where he came from. Is it possible to find anything out? I guess that, if his father is not named, he must have died before his son's marriage?

MaureeninNY Report 10 Nov 2014 22:44

I'm not sure you've gotten the connection that Thomas SIDLOW and Thomas LEE are the same person?

Thomas was born prior to his mother's marriage to Benjamin SIDLOW and appears as SIDLOW on the census when he was with the family but marries and carries on with the LEE name.

So,Alice was his half-sister.

I didn't pick up the separate info about James Halton gardener and the Corinthic until after I had typed the thank you above. Probably the Ionie James Halton was a red herring. It seems more likely that the one I am looking for was the one on the Corinthic, especially as Turton seems to crop up more than once in Connection with him.

Thank you, all.

Empey Report 10 Nov 2014 21:03

Thank you. The evidence seems to indicate that there was no Alice Lee, sister of Thomas Henry Lee. The Alice who married James Halton was Alice Sidlow. An advanced guard seems to have emigrated to NZ in 1911, followed in 1913 by Jane Lee nee Kenyon and her daughter Zipporah. The 1911 group included Thomas Henry Lee (we do not know the ship), a James Halton (on the SS Ionie) and Thomas Sidlow and his sister Mary Ellen Sidlow.

They all seem to be connected, one way or another. Thomas Sidlow's brother William Sidlow witnessed the marriage of Thomas Henry Lee and Jane Kenyon in 1904. In the England census of 1911, Alice and James Halton were living in the same street as Jane Kenyon, mother of Jane Lee. It seems that they all planned to emigrate together.

Another shred of evidence suggests that Alice was not the sister of Thomas Henry Lee. Zipporah Lee's daughter says that Alice left the farm to Porah, although she was not a relation. (Other family lore has it that Alice was Thomas Henry's sister).

Ho-hum! More food for thought.

Thank you again.

No luck on my part either. There's a Jas Halton going in 1911 but he's a gardener which doesn't seem to fit.

Oh well.
