Western Daily Press - Wednesday 15 July 1931

DEATH OF LADY SLADE
Mother of Mr Gandhi's Home Rule Convert
Lady Slade, whose death was announced yesterday, was the widow of Admiral Sir Edmond J Warre Slade and Mother of Miss Madeleine Slade, who six years ago joined the Indian Home Rule movement under Mr Gandhi.
She renounced her position in English society, learned to spin and weave, and allowed her black hair to be cropped close to her head.
After three years of study Miss Slade became a trained worker in Gandhi's 'refuge' and assumed the Indian name of Shrimati Mira Bai.

As I said my cousin has asked my to do him a favour and this is his connection with Sir Benjamin. I am not after money and neither is he.

If you see the cast you will see that Sir Benjamin has a part.

There is nothing suspicious I can assure you I was just trying to do my cousin, Matthew John, a favour.

I'm sorry, Cara, but I just think that this whole thread is very suspicious.

I can't understand why Sir Benjamin, a multimillionaire, who already has a family tree going back to Alfred the Great would ask an amateur to carry out research for him.

So what exactly are you looking for? There's a wealth of information on the web.

You're not being paid for this research, are you?

Cara

Cara Report 8 Nov 2014 12:39

I just though I would start by asking for some help on here, that's what I thought this community pages was for.

MargaretM

MargaretM Report 8 Nov 2014 11:44

But, Cara, all of this information that's being sent to you is readily available on the web. Why not do the research yourself?

Cara

Cara Report 8 Nov 2014 11:30

Thank you Gritty for your help most appreciated.

Article on Sir Cuthberts marriage sent
Obituary of Sir Alfred sent
Obituary of Sir Frederick sent

Sir Frederick WIlliam Slade had a twin brother, Marcus- when Frederick died there was a huge case over who should take over the baronetcy- I've sent just one of the articles concerning the case.

This is just a start- the articles give lots of details of children/ relatives. However, there are many many more article available on this family.

Cara

Cara Report 8 Nov 2014 09:16

Yes I was asked by him via my cousin. I can't tell you any more than that and I don't feel I have to explain myself to you. There have been some people on here who have been helpful to which I am grateful.

MargaretM

MargaretM Report 7 Nov 2014 21:27

So now it's your cousin who has asked you to do research? But why? Sir Benjamin can trace his family back to Alfred the Great.

In your opening post you said that you had been asked by Sir Benjamin to carry out research on his behalf. Again I ask why?

Cara

Cara Report 7 Nov 2014 21:19

No not a potential relative or after the job of "young lady". My cousin is a friend of Sir Benjamins and has asked me to do some research.

MarieCeleste

MarieCeleste Report 6 Nov 2014 14:53

That is what raised my suspicions Margee ;-)

MargaretM

MargaretM Report 6 Nov 2014 10:26

Or, perhaps you're after this job?

In an act of desperation, Sir Ben — who can trace his family tree back to Alfred the Great — has placed an advertisement on Facebook, looking for a ‘young lady’ companion and offering a £50,000 salary plus bonus, car, house, expenses, food and holidays.

Edit: One wonders if he can trace his family tree back to Alfred the Great why would he ask an amateur to carry out research?

MargaretM

You're not one of the 10,000 potential relatives are you?

The newspaper articles are available on this site (whether you pay per view or they're included depends on your subscription package), similarly on FindMyPast. Also on British Newspaper Archives.

Perhaps you need to ask him for more information - we'd be happy to help if so.
