Simon ...............

correction to what you have just posted.

The Census does not state that Joseph Steel was married ...........

........ that is what he himself, or the person who gave the information, told the enumerator, and what the enumerator wrote down on the census sheet.

That other person could have been Ann, one of the children, or a neighbour.

Just as many people lived common-law back then as now ................. in fact, I sometimes think there were more then!

AND more of them lied about their status, as they did not want the neighbours or anyone in authority to know that they were not married.

I think we can leave it there. There is enough evidence to convince me that he is a relative, but its a shame they never married, despite the census stating otherwise

my thanks everyone <3

Thank you

I believe that Joseph Steel that married Jane Burrow is the same one born in 1828 because on the census his birth location is given as Brunstock or Hayton, all of theme no more than 2 to 3 miles apart. Getting the record would confirm the assumption. Yes that Walter is my great, great, great grandfather

Catherine

Catherine Report 2 Nov 2014 16:42

Is this your Walter?

Walter Steel
England Births and Christenings, 1538-1975
christening: 7 May 1837 Crosby-upon-Eden, Cumberland, England
residence: Crosby-upon-Eden, Cumberland, England
father: Joseph Steel
mother: Ann

....if it is then it looks as though he did have a brother called Joseph:-

Joseph Steel
England Births and Christenings, 1538-1975
christening: 5 April 1828 CROSBY UPON EDEN,CUMBERLAND,ENGLAND
father: Joseph Steel
mother: Ann

Crosby upon Eden isn't a million miles from Cumwhitton.

The Joseph Steel in 1851 census posted by Jacqueline gives his birth place as Crosby, so it is very likely that my baptism is the same Joseph Steel as that of the census.

MargaretM Report 2 Nov 2014 16:38

A tree on Ancestry says that Joseph Steel was born 1828, Crosby upon Eden, Cumberland, son of Joseph Steel & Ann Badley and that he had a brother Walter born 1837 same place.

Hi Jacqueline

I want to find a marriage record so I can find out who the father of Joseph was.

I am not descended from Joseph and Jane, Joseph's brother may have been Walter Steel, my direct great, great, great grandfather, whom I am descended from.

This makes Joseph my great, great, great granduncle

My aim is to make a complete tree of the Steel family <3

If they didn't marry, you can't find a record

How did you come to be researching this couple?

Is one of their children in your line?

Or are you just looking at anyone named Steel in the County, with a view to completing your tree?

How would a marriage record help you?

SimontheScholar

SimontheScholar Report 1 Nov 2014 16:46

Thanks guys

All of the censuses you posted are the right family.

Perhaps the later children were named Steel because they married at a later date after the births of Ann and John.

I need the marriage record so I can confirm or deny they belong in my family

Hello

Ann Steel was born in 1851 in Cockermouth to Joseph Steel and Jane Burrow, her brother Joseph Steel was born in 1862 in Brampton

Looking at the marriage records, I cannot find a marriage for them

Joseph was born in 1828 in Crosby Upon Eden and Jane Burrow was born in 1830 in Cumwhitton

Joseph and Jane are not married in the 1851 census, so they were married sometime that year or shortly afterwards.

any help will be appreciated <3
