I have been searching high and low for the parents of Katherine without any success,

She married Frederick Newman in Northampton in the March Quarter of 1896.

In 1911 she appears in the census with Frederick and her children occupying "2 living Vans" (caravans) at the Victoria Grounds Wellingborough. Katherine describes herself as 36, born in Nottingham. The family's children are Alice Newman (Leicester 1901), Sarah Newman (Leicester 1904), Bridget Newman (Kettering 1907), Frederick Newman (Leicester 1909).

I have been unable to find Katherine in any previous censuses.

Her husband Frederick Newman appears in the 1881 census in Stony Stratford and in the 1891 census in Northampton. As they marry in Northampton it's safe to assume Katherine was living there during the 1890s.

The Newman Family were travellers and Frederick's father Charles Newman (Harrold 1853) was also living on the Victoria Grounds site in 1911 and described himself as a general dealer.

Can anyone find Katherine and her family?

Thanks

Richard

My mistake, I'm looking for Katherine Gorman and not Katherine Newman. Just a simple typo.

I'm tempted to start a new thread but I''ll give it a bit of time.

Absolutely no reason to start another thread.

just amend the woman's surname in your title

Two more children? So unless the question was asked wrongly by the registrar, or misunderstood, the mother's maiden name was Gorman (i.e. not previously married, so looking for surname Gorman in previous census)

You would be well advised to get a copy of the marriage cert

As I read it, Richard, the poster, has said that he does not actually have the marriage certificate, in which case the GRO will show the surnames of the couple getting married, but not whether they are single, widowed or divorced at the time of marriage.

Or is that not the case? Perhaps I have missed seeing where he says for sure that Gorman is the maiden name? Or am I missing something obvious.

Richard

I've amended the title to Katherine Gorman from Newman to stop any confusion.

Thanks. This family looks very promising.

I've had another look at the births in Nottinghamshire and the entry given above is the only Catherine Gorman born in Nottingham near to 1875.

Can anyone find the family of Peter Gorman (Ireland1837) and Bridget (1840 Holyhead) before.or indeed after 1881.

(would be interesting to see name of father on Marriage Cert.)

Richard

Richard Report 28 Oct 2014 09:26

On freebmd there is only one birth of a Catherine or Katherine Gorman in Nottingham from 1807-1900, so I think that the baptism at St Patrick's Nottingham must be the person I am looking for. Father James Gorman. Mother Bridget O'Donald.

Similarly the only Catherine Gorman born in Nottingham at the relevant time that I can find in the censuses is the Catherine Gorman in Mancetter belonging to the family og Peter Gorman and his wife Bridget.

Any explanations? What was this father calling himself in other censuses?
