Denise Report 15 Oct 2014 22:45

i am trying to find information on my grandfather George Ernest Scott.
All i know of him was that he was born abt 1903, his mother died in childbirth.
He was put in orpanage (my mother thinks Darlington) thing is i can't find any orphanages, poor houses in that place.
My question is does anybody know of any sites that i could look at that may be of help, looked on a few doing my head in.
Thank you
Denise

What do you wish to know?

What research have you done yourself?

Have you, for instance, looked at freebmd to try to find his birth?

Or was his name changed?

Who did he marry?

Do you have a copy of the cert?

Hi Denise.
Do you know if his mother was married? It would be a big help if you knew his fathers' name.
Do you know if he had any siblings?
Jan

If he wasn't taken in by the extended family, he may have been left in the care of the Workhouse.

Althought it doesn't give any dates, the following site refers to Cottage Homes for children

http://www.workhouses.org.uk/Darlington/

If nothing else, it might be worth contacting Durham County Record Office to see if they have any record of him. There is a hyperlink on the page

The only 1903 birth for the name you give

Births Mar 1903 (>99%)
SCOTT George Ernest S. Shields 10a 815

Two possible deaths

Deaths Mar 1903 (>99%)

Scott Catherine 31 S. Shields 10a 455
Scott Mary 25 S. Shields 10a 500

If you think the birth may be him, a copy of the birth cert will identify his mother

The South Shields one seems to be with full family in 1911.

We don't, of course, know yet whether the name given by the poster was the man's birth name

This is that 1911 Census that Kay??? found ..................

this version is from ancestry, and paging back to p 3 (of 17) eventually produces the name and address of the institution ..................

St Peters Orphanage for Boys
Gainford
Darlington

It is in the Ecclesiastical Parish of St Mary, in the rural district of Barnard Castle

on p. 15 of that census of a large institution (ca 286 boys), we find the Scott boys ...............

Denise ..........

please in future do not tick any replies to requests!

On GR, the tick means that your question has been answered, and indicates that no-one else need look at the thread :-(

Unfortunately, a quirk in the system means that once ticked, the tick cannot be undone .............. so we will have to trust that seeing the tick mark on the list of threads on the Board will not deter other helpers.

if you want to know more about St Peters and / or St Joseph's ..................... Google the names

this is just one of the sites that came up when I did that

http://www.jarrelook.co.uk/Urbex/Saint%20Peters%20Care%20Home/Saint_Peters_Care_Home.htm

it seems that it was also Catholic, from that site ............

"Built around 1900 by the Catholic church, Saint Peters was initially an orphanage for 300 boys and it functioned as such for almost 40 years. "

a little snippet I found for St Joseph's ............

"St Joseph's Home was located in Darlington, at the corner of Carmel Road and Millbank Road, in the Boyes Hill area the premises having initially been Cleveland College, a boarding school for boys up until 1887. St Joseph's Industrial School for Roman Catholic Girls was certified March 1893 for 60 girls. It was later re-certified in 1898 to accommodate 120 girls and again in 1911 for an additional 30 girls. Denise,if you contact Durham Archives they may have the Admission and Discharge ledgers for St Peters ,it may require a visit to view them, but they give details of why, when and parents name/s or their guardian and usually an address.
