Thanks Potty.

I will probably never find the birth/bapt for Francis, but am interested to know roughly what area of Ireland he MAY have come from just in case I do find his birth/bapt info.......!!

What you say makes sense and is something for me to think about.

I know Irish research isn't exactly easy......

Thanks again Potty,

Marcus ;-)

Ancestry brings up over 5000 people born in Ireland living in the Whitechapel Reg Dist in 1841. That is the only census Francis 1791 appears on. Margaret is the one whose POB changes from Ireland in 1841 to St Georges in 1851.

Given that the children were baptised and married in the Anglican parish church, it would appear that the family probably weren't Catholic, so possibly (but not necessarily) Francis was born in one of the Ulster counties. Even if you find a baptism for a Francis b1791, how could you be sure that it was your Francis?

Magaret is the eldest daughter of Francis & Margaret Finegan (as mentioned by potty). She married Henry John Finch (as mention by brummiejan). Emma is their daughter !!

Emma Finch is my 2xGreat grandmother on my fathers side of things!

Getting back to my original question, if there is a sizeable Irish population in the St George in the East area of London, and Francis Finnegan IS Irish, then which part of Ireland might they have come from? North, south, S/E Ireland ??

Failing that, where was Francis born/baptised?

There does seem to have been a daughter called Margaret - and she would appear to have been baptised twice! Unless there were two Francis (bricklayer) & Margaret living in the same street and having a child with almost the same name on the same day!

Margaret Fannagan 2 Nov 1817 St George in the East Tower Hamlets Francis Fannagan,

Ancestry has images of both.

I wonder who Emma is? Not even a birthplace given!

Did go out on a limb here, but probably a co-incidence - you know how I like to speculate!!:

Jan,

It does seem unlikely. Unless only Francis was and the whole family was accidently put down as 'Irish' by the enumerator?

With a name like Finnegan....... Well, to me it is a Irish name!

Margaret, his wife, was English (from London) as far as I know.

Ann,

Thanks for that. Where did you dig that up from? It may be a possibility?

Thanks to you both,

Marcus

Marcus, in 1841 it states that the whole family was born in Ireland, but in view of the London marriage this seems unlikely doesn't it. Wonder if it's just an error?

One of my ancestors, Francis Finegan, states in 1841 census that he and all his family came from 'Ireland'. (No where in particular - just Ireland).

(1841 census ref:- HO 107 / 716 folio 5 pp3) (Queens Head Court).

In 1816/17 he marries Margaret Wood, at St George in the East, Middlesex, and his 7 children ARE born in this area (1817 - 1831).

From 1851 census onwards, he states that he and all his family are from St Geoerge in the East are of London - no irish roots mentioned !!

My question being, if there is/was an irish population in this part of London, which part of Ireland did they tend to come from. Or is this too big a question to ask??

Any thoughts?

Marcus
