Actually, the name change is very simple to explain ..................

he went back to his birth name Constable, after having lived as Wickenden when with his stepfather and mother :-)

and you have never needed to change your name by Deed Poll ................ it is quite sufficient to announce to those who need to know that "from henceforth I, John Smith, will be known as John Quatrefiles"

I often used to see such announcements in the local paper back in the 1950s and 1960s .............. and even that is unnecessary as long as banks, and others know the name change.

That is, of course, as long as you are not changing your name for a nefarious purpose :-)

In John Wickenden's case, he did what we see so often ..........

......... a child born before a marriage, whether illegitimately or to a previous husband, but growing up with the current step-father's surname, will change back to the birth surname as soon as possible, or when it is realised.

Joanna ..............

why don't you post the census instead of making us all go and hunt for the information ourselves?

it's easy to C&P, and it is allowed to be done on here ......... we did get that clarified some years ago.

Joanna Report 3 Oct 2014 21:58

I find James Constable and Elizabeth Constable in Sevenoaks in 1881 with 1 son and 4 daughters. Birth town is ‘Sevenoaks Weald’.

Naomi Wickenden is the ‘Mother’ of the ‘Head of the Household’ who is James Constable.

In 1841 the Wickendens are living in the same house as the Kenswoods. There are James and Naomi Wickenden with their children James, Elizabeth, Francis and William listed as Wickenden.

In 1851 the Wickendens are James, Naomi, with Elizabeth, Francis, William, Mary, Sophia and Sarah as their children.

In 1861 the Wickendens are James, Naomi, with William, Mary Ann, Sarah Ann, Eliza and Harriett as their children.

In 1871 Naomi Wickenden is living as ‘Mother’ to the ‘Head of the Household’ with James and Elizabeth Constable and their children Edwin J and Annie, along with James’s sister Eliza Wickenden.

The records listed online only go back as far as September 1837 and James Wickenden junior (also known as Constable) was born in either 1831 or 1834 (dependent on which census you are looking at).

James Constable dies in the qtr of Dec 1884 aged 53.

James Wickenden marries in 1950 to either:
• Rose Gaffney
• Mary Ann Boakes
• Elizabeth Millbourn
(There is a Rose Wickenden and an Elizabeth Wickenden who show as Deaths between 1850 (the year James Wickenden appears to marry first – he has left the family home before 1951 census) and 1866 when he marries again as a widower.)

At some stage after 1950 when he marries first James Wickenden becomes James Constable. This is the mystery!!

Changing your name by deeds poll started from 1851!! Does this mean that he changed his name simply because he wanted to??
Not listed online, the indexes are listed at Kew.

James Read (b. c1791) and Ann Read (b. c1796) are Elizabeth’s parents. She has James, Samuel, George, Elenor, Lucy, Edwin and Emily as siblings on the 1841 census.

In 1851 Elizabeth Read is living with her brother James Job Read and his wife and children in Malling district.

In 1861 Elizabeth Read is living with her brother Samuel Read who has become a widower and they are living with his children.

At some stage after 1850 when he marries first, James Wickenden becomes James Constable. This is the mystery!!

Changing your name by deeds poll started from 1851!! Does this mean that he changed his name simply because he wanted to??
Not listed online, the indexes are listed at Kew.

http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/ says the following:
5.1 Deeds poll 1851-2003
Visit The National Archives in Kew and consult the indexes to enrolled deeds poll. The indexes cannot be searched online.
For 1851 to 1903 first consult the indexes in C 275 - they show only the former name. This will enable you to access the relevant document in C 54. Indexes and the enrollment books for 1903 to 2003 are in J 18. The indexes show both the former and the new name, either as a note or a cross-reference.
Indexes from 1945 to 2003 can be consulted freely, but you will need to register as a reader if you want to:
consult indexes from before 1945
view the original deed poll and/or purchase a certified copy
If you cannot visit in person, our website explains how you can pay for someone to do research for you.

Hope that helps - I do believe this explains the change of surname between 1850 and 1851.
