As you can appreciate with a name like that it is not hard to imagine why I cannot find my paternal grandfather. My father was born in June 1916, my grandfathers name is shown on his 9 (my dad) birthcert together with his address, regiment. name of mother and her maiden name, despite numerous searches he, JTB, remains a mystery. Can anyone offer advice, guidance, help. Kind regards Mick Brown

Potty Report 1 Oct 2014 13:17

Michael, could you give us more details of the info on the birth cert, please. Have you looked for a marriage for him to the mother named on the cert?

Potty

Potty Report 1 Oct 2014 13:21

Michael, if you give us the Regiment, we might be able to find his WW1 medal card and possibly hid Service or Pension record.

PM received from Michael - Michael, it is better to respond on this thread rather than by PMs as then everyone can see the info:

My late father was born on the 30th June 1916, his father is shown as a John Thomas Brown and his mother was Lily May Brown (nee Baron)

The address shown is 88 Wolseley Road Southampton and his birth was registered in the sub district of Southampton western on the 14th August the same year.

JTB is described as a Sergeant in the 1s Gloucester Regiment number 910 which I assume was his service number. Any help would be appreciated. MB

This looks like John and Lily's marriage - the cert should give you John's father's name and occupation and possibly his age (although it may just say "Full age". This info would help to find him on the census.

Need to get some certs, I think Michael. There is another tree on Ancestry for the John b1891 in Weeke but it has different wives and children.

Michael

Michael Report 6 Oct 2014 04:08

Hello, my thanks to everyone who has replied, The information provided is spot on however the Lily B Baron is not the one however the the tree listing his children is THE one, the Montague Charles Francis Brown was my father.

Potty, I would appreciate the medal info and advice on how to obtain certificates. Again I am so very grateful.

What does amaze me is that JTB died in 970. I was 23, married with a child and my Grandfather was never mentioned during my childhood, this was also the same in relation to my paternal g'mother. Regards Mike (Australia)

Have PM'd the medal card. From the low Regimental number (910) I would guess that John had been in the Army for quite a while.

You can order certs from this site:

http://www.gro.gov.uk/

This site is very useful for finding BMDs:

http://www.freebmd.org.uk/

I am not sure if the tree that Mike posted is correct - the MMN is Lily B Baron, not the Lily M that you have on the BC; also, as I said above, there is a tree on Ancestry for the John b1891 in Weeke and it show two wives, neither of them a Lily.

If John had been in the Army for some time, possibly he and Lily B married abroad.

This is the birth reg for the Lily M b1912:

Births Dec 1912 (>99%)
Brown Lily M Baron Christchurch 2b 1189

The cert would confirm the mother's maiden name and whether John was already in the Army.

FMP has pre-1913 Army Records - I don't have access; perhaps someone who does could take a look.

Potty Report 6 Oct 2014 12:53

I have looked for 88 Wolseley Road in the 1911 but it doesn't seem to be there; I can find 86 and 90 but no 88!

Hello, I am still working on my tree however I can't seem to add details to those I have added. If I click on the name it allows me to edit, I then wish to add free text to that person, if I do that any details added seem to disappear. What am I doing wrong.

Potty Report 17 Oct 2014 11:38

Hi Michael, can't help I'm afraid, I don't do much on my tree on here. It might be better to start a new thread for this query, as it may not be noticed here.
