I am having an issue trying to find a marriage for this gentleman and was wondering whether anyone here can't see something I am not.

I can only find him on the 1851 census aged 37 (although its been transcribed as 27), and living with his wife Elizabeth aged 31. His two kids Frank b1846 and Charlotte c1849 are also present. James himself dies in 1860 so the trail goes cold in that direction for him.

I do have a copy of Frank's birth certificate which states his mother was an Elizabeth Strudwick formally Martin. I just cannot find a marriage between James and an Elizabeth Martin, and I know its the same Elizabeth on the census because in 1856 she gave birth to Mary Ann Strudwick and she is listed on there as formerly Martin.

Any ideas out there?

I always forget to put some informaion in my posts.

James according to the 1951 census was born in N K Sussex, which I am led to believe is not known Sussex
Elizabeth is the same but N K Surrey
Frank is also N K Sussex, but as I have a birth certificate, this states it is Midhurst in Sussex.

Ok, the next image is the one for this family

James & Frank born Sussex, Elizabeth born Surrey

Jacqueline

Jacqueline Report 21 Aug 2014 22:53

perhaps he'd been married before he met Elizabeth, and wasn't free to legalise their union

He was a few years older than her

Jacqueline

Jacqueline Report 21 Aug 2014 22:57

Have you looked for and found Elizabeth in 1841?

meefy

meefy Report 21 Aug 2014 22:59

Elizabeth I also have in 1861 and it states she was born in Cobham, Surrey.

I think she remarries in 1867 to a Charles Strong, and dies in 1870. That marriage record states according to my uncle that the fathers name is William Martin and he is deceased.

Ages for people over the age of 15 were rated downwards to the nearest 5 on the 1841 Census

James was 37 on the 1851, therefore presumably ca 27 in 1841 .......................

I wonder if one of these could be him ???????????

Not much help there!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Any one of those James, except possibly the Baker, could have become a railway Labourer by 1851 ............ there was lots of work building the railways, and pay was often better than, eg, for an agricultural labourer.

Just in case it helps with a possible father if a marriage registration is found ................ here are the other people in the household with each respective James

I find myself intrigued with thsi James Strudwick ............... even though he says born in Surrey.

look where he is living!

1841 Census

Name: James Strudwick
Age: 29
Estimated birth year: abt 1812
Gender: Male
Where born: Surrey, England
Civil Parish: Cobham <<<<<<<<<<<<
Hundred: Elmbridge (Second Division)
County/Island: Surrey
Country: England

Registration district: Epsom
Sub-registration district: Leatherhead
Neighbors: View others on page

James Strudwick 29 Ag Lab
Eliza Strudwick 30
James Strudwick 5
Charles Strudwick 4

Charles was omitted form the List, and is shown as living all by himself, but he is definitely in the household, so I've added him.

I have tried and tried, but I cannot find them on a alter census

Also living in Cobham on the 1841 is the following Eliza Martin ...............

Name: Eliza Martin
Age: 20
Estimated birth year: abt 1821
Gender: Female
Where born: Surrey, England
Civil Parish: Cobham
Hundred: Elmbridge (Second Division)
County/Island: Surrey
Country: England

Registration district: Epsom
Sub-registration district: Leatherhead

Ths Hicks 50 Ag Lab
Mary Hicks 45
Jno Hicks 15
Ths Hicks 9
Eliza Martin 20 (no occupation shown)
Willm Martin 2weeks

Again, I can't trace William Martin b. 1841.

Am I stretching it ?????????????????????????????????

Helen - I am of the belief that his death was in 1860. On the 1861 census Elizabeth has been widowed and all the children are present with her.

I have been messaged with an article from the Berkshire Chronicle for a James Strudwick in 1849 being injured whilst working on the railway. This was whilst working on the Reigate line in Surrey.

Gritty

Gritty Report 22 Aug 2014 19:26

The burial looks to fit as the residence is listed as South Moreton where the family were living in 1851. I've pm'd the inquest article in case you don't have it.

meefy

meefy Report 22 Aug 2014 19:36

Ahh!! So you are the same Helen who PM'd me. I wasn't sure sure because on here it says Helen with one surname but on the pm it says Helen with a different surname

Thank you once again for this.

could you please delete the two surnames for Helen

GR tells you that only your Board name will be used in all communications, but they do not carry out that promise!

I'm pretty certain that Helen would like at least one of those names kept out of the public domain.

it's OK ................ most people don't realise that that is what happens!

I discovered by accident when someone reported a post I had made, and he gloatingly sent me a copy of the pm that GR had sent to him .......... and there for him to see was my maiden name. It is a little unusual, and therefore would be easy to trace me if he so wanted (he was being rather malicious at that time)

Their rationale was that this was the name on my Account, and therefore they used it.

My surname in my Personal Details is now ...................... In Canada :-D

I find it very worrying that pms are now going out under 2 different surnames ............. but we just have to keep our fingers crossed that that cause no problems.
