Had another look at the image on Ancestry - yes, it does indeed say "ruddy" and not "muddy"
I beg poor Gertrude's pardon!

JoonieCloonie

JoonieCloonie Report 10 Aug 2014 07:20

ah I see, you were talking about actual 'enemy aliens' ... but 'aliens' are not automatically 'enemies'

http://www.ellisisland.org/genealogy/ellis_island_timeline.asp

1917 - When the U.S. entered the war in Europe, Ellis Island was used to detain crews from German merchant ships anchored in New York Harbor. >> Suspected enemy aliens throughout America were rounded up and brought to Ellis Island.

1938-1945 - After the U.S. entered the war in December 1941, Ellis Island served primarily as a detention center for alien enemies, those considered to be inadmissible and others.

just for info: :-)

enumerator instructions for US censuses
(and similar questions up to 1940)

150. The question of immigration (columns 16 and 17) applies to all foreign-born persons, male and female, of whatever age. If does not apply to persons born in the United States.

151. Column 18. Naturalization.-If the persons is a native of the United States, leave the column blank. >> If he was born abroad, and has taken no steps toward becoming an American citizen, write "Al" (for alien). If he has declared his intention to become an American citizen and taken out his "first" papers, write "Pa" (for papers). If he has become a full citizen by taking out second or final papers of naturalization, write "Na" (for naturalized).

JC ................ look at the Ellis Island Timeline ........

....... they actually use the phrase "alien enemies" during the period from 1940 to about 1947

which is why I said what I said.

I myself was a Resident Alien in the US in the mid-1960s :-)

they are now called Green Cards

JoonieCloonie

JoonieCloonie Report 10 Aug 2014 06:17

Sylvia ... an alien is just a non-citizen :-)

in US census up to 1930 I think it was, people who are legally resident in the US but not naturalized as citizens are described as aliens

all the talk these days of 'illegal aliens' on their southern border derives from that now archaic use of the word ... nobody uses it in everyday parlance except in that disparaging phrase but it is still the word used in legislation in the US for foreign nationals (who would ever say 'legal alien'?!)

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 10 Aug 2014 00:51

Always look on the Ellis Island site for immigrants post -1892 to about 1940

During WW2 and until about 1952, Ellis island was used to detain "aliens" ...... ie, enemies

you have to register, but it is free

You can view the manifest on the site that Chris has posted above. Her mother was Mrs Elizabeth Muir, Duntreath, Glasgow Rd, Wishaw.
The Gibsons are all sisters whose aunt stayed at 86 Forrest St. Clarkston and Marion is a friend.

ArgylleGran, Gertrude is described as having a 'ruddy complexion' which is a bit better than 'muddy' thank goodness!
