Seems a lot of Honey's about . and illegitimate children lol.

Many Thanks.

Its a very strong link with the information i had passed to me by family. The honeys are distant family and Jesse's Demise at Limehouse fits nicely with what I knew.

Dea, ref your earlier observation from 1871 census. Jesse Senior was living with Elizabeth May (Mistress) ;-) She must have been pregnant .She gave birth to Jesse Junior in 1871. On 10th Jan 1873 Jesse Senior drowned from the barge "union" in Limehouse London. By 14/7/1878 she married Robert Wilson and he adopted Jesse Junior as his own son. They had a further 7 children together one being my Grandmother.

Notes shows him as Jesse James May in 1881 census. Later Jesse May-Honey step son of Robert Wilson, In 1891 census he lives with a John Smith at Gillingham Kent as Barge Mate aged 20. 1896 he marries Eliza Wenham .1901 census has i daughter Rose 1 month and now a stone quarryman. 1911 census shows him as a widower aged 40 and Bargeman / mate lodging with sister Elizabeth Palmer. Son Jesse James Honey born 1905 we believe was fostered after death of mother. Sister Rose age 10 was living with my grandmother Caroline (Kesiah) nee Wilson b1886 and Grandfather Frederick R Parker b1885.

My mother remembered meeting Rose at my Grandmothers house in 1945.
Jesse died in 1929 aged 58.

So the circle is closing.

I just checked my notes I was wrong Robert Wilson and Elizabeth May married 14/7/1878 at St Faiths Church Maidstone, i also found from independant info from my family passed on records, that Jesse Honey's father died in 1873 - Perfect im sure I have a link..

Must have been sad for Jesse and Elizabeth to lose a father and partner then a step father and husband both to drowning from Barges. Must have been a very real occupational hazard.

Thank you all, some intigueing things about Jesse Honey that will need some investigation. It is an unusual name and linking in the barge information makes it look as if my Jesse b1871 was part of the same family. Was Elizabeth May - Jesse Honey's mother, common law wife or partner to Jesse Senior or did she revert to her maiden name before marrying Robert Wilson. It is likely the newspaper article 10/1/1873 relates to my Jesse Honey's biological father Jesse senior as Elizabeth was widowed prior to meeting and marrying Robert Wilson in Dec 1874. It is very likely that the barge folk would know and be friends with each other. It would be great to confirm all these links.

Yes - It probably means that he was part of a large family rather than he was the father of many children. I suppose, that's what you immediately think when there is also a 'widow' involved.

On the 1871 census there are lots of Honey's living at Windmill Row- perhaps his parents

Dea

Dea Report 9 Aug 2014 14:26

Thanks Helen - I was looking in the newspapers but hadn't found anything.. - That is certainly the correct death.

It is VERY interesting as I am sure that he didn't marry Elizabeth and even if he did, they appear to have had only one child ???

SO who and where is this 'widow' and 'large' family I wonder ??

Gritty Report 9 Aug 2014 14:16

Sorry, this isn't immediatley related (and you may already have the information) but interestingly, there is an article dated 10th Jan 1873 about a Jesse Honey:-

Dover Express 10 January 1873
MAIDSTONE
At an early hour on Friday morning, Jesse Honey, residing in Windmill Row, Maidstone, Captain of the barge Union, accidentally fell overboard in Limehouse reach, and was drowned before assistance could reach him. notwithstanding that every effort was made to rescue him. The deceased has left a widow and a large family.

That's better - I thought I was going doolally there :-D

Elizabeth May and Jesse Honey never married - on 1871 census she was listed as his 'Mistress' ;-) under her own name and both marked as unmarried.

I will take a look for Eliza Waghorn...............

Derek

Derek Report 9 Aug 2014 12:41

very sorry getting confused. Yes Robert Wilson married Elizabeth May on 14/7/1878 she was a widow and had son Jesse Honey b1871 - Robert took Jesse on as his own son, but jesse kept surname Honey. Robert had several children and had a daughter later Caroline my grandmother ( who called herself Kesiah).

My side the Parkers- Great grandfather Stephen Parker b1849 married Eliza A Waghorn b1857 it is she I am having difficulty with. She was born in Town Sutton (Sutton Valence) Maidstone

Dea

Dea Report 9 Aug 2014 12:01

Sorry - I have lost you there on Eliza Waghorn

Are you saying that Jesse Honey (the father of the 10 year old boy on the 1881 census) married Eliza??

I believed that the 10 year old Jesse there was the son of Jesse Honey and 'your' Elizabeth (then Elizabeth May), and it looks as though he (the father) died not long after.??

Dea x :-S

Derek

Derek Report 9 Aug 2014 10:41

Also Jesse Honey, A daliance outside and before marriage to Eliza Waghorn was a bargee too. I am finding difficulty tracing exact parentage of Eliza A Waghorn she was born in Town Sutton (Sutton Valence) Maidstone but Waghorns seem prolific locally and she may have been listed as Elizabeth. Funnily enough Robert seniors barge was Elizabeth which he fell off and drowned.

Derek

Derek Report 9 Aug 2014 10:33

Yes Dea.

Caroline my gran renamed herself Kesiah for some unknown reason and Robert Junior was a barge master too.

Many Thanks Derek
